What does everyone think of Slutwalk?

November 11 2012

The SlutWalk protest marches began on April 3, 2011, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and became a movement of rallies across the world. Participants protest against explaining or excusing rape by referring to any aspect of a woman's appearance. The rallies began when Constable Michael Sanguinetti, a Toronto Police officer, suggested that to remain safe, "women should avoid dressing like sluts." The protest takes the form of a march, mainly by young women, where some dress provocatively, like sluts. There are also speaker meetings and workshops. Some objectors have remarked that this approach is an example of women defining their sexuality in male terms. Has anyone here been to one of the Slutwalk marches? What did you think of it? It seems you're either for it or against it - there's no middle ground here?

Which is also a metaphor for action other than mouth. If it works for some people, that's great. Why not? The Slut Walk sounds like it has a light hearted bent to go with the serious nature of the subject. It should be remembered, slutty clothing or not, accepting the word NO is actually a big part of free speech.I guess dressing slutty may be an attempt to attract A man/woman. But you would be naive to read it as an attempt to attract ANY man/woman. Sluts have a right to be particular too.

...but I suspect you're right, Storm_girl. For the record, I'm for it. A woman's appearance can not ever be an excuse for rape.

Everything about her says yes and then she says no afterwards ?Or if she is doing it for money and just doesn't get paid ?Or what if it is him, not her, who makes the claim ?Not justifying anything just saying there is a wide range and mud sticks ...

Legislation is no substitute for common sense , if you dress provocatively, get in a car with drunk or drugged up strangers then it is a bit late to expect the law to rescue you.I don't for a moment think people "deserve" to be abused or assaulted because of the way they dress or even act provocatively, but people must also use some common sense and take some responsibility for themselves.I think the walk is a good thing.
