Sarapis ... interesting question. Having spent part of my younger years (aged 10) growing up in a very sexually liberated european country where pornography was part of every day life and copies of porn mags were commonplace on coffee tables, I think gambling is far worse. Sex is natural and so long as it is not portrayed in any form of abuse then I am up for openness. Everyone I know from that country has a very open mind and they are non judgemental on so many levels. Something that we need more of around the world I think. It's when things get hidden and treated like tabboo that problems arise. Possibly gambling could be treated the same way as smoking is, with more of an anti-gambling advertising campaign. Addiction is not to be encouraged in any shape or form. It limits people's lives in so many ways IMO. SFxx

more important what children learn from you, sex on tv depends on what kind, how graphic and how old the kids sex on tv gives distorted reality of sex if you watch tv you would think that women get off every time they have sex, or that they had sex when in love or married or that girls that do it are whores, sluts or what ever gamgling is like an addiction about power, and making you feel good at the time. till you loose of course. I think adds for food are a problem re the fast food industry rather than gambling. ohh yeah and pole dancing dads, can also cause all kinds of devient behavours. To much lycra , avert your eyes kids

I wish the wowsers in our society would jump up and down and yell and shout and scream as loud about gambling and advertising as much as they do about a pair of boobs and the religious people would demand kids be shielded from gambling as much as they demand they are kept away from sex

Which is worse for kids to see on tv but more to the point is it necessary to have either on tv? As adults we know about gambling and sex and supposedly have the maturity to make informed decisions. Our children should be protected while not being wrapped in cotton wool and it is our job as mature, responsible adults to see to the protection if them!. All those of you who think it is fine for kids (of any age) to view sexually explicit material in the relative safety of their homes ask yourself this.,... Would you have sex in front of these children? I know I wouldn't. Very young children can associate the noises of sex as violence, older teens are more likely to be totally grossed out and embarrassed. Watching adults gamble does not have the same effect as watching adults fuck!!'- Posted from rhpmobile

I would not have let my sons watch porn at a too young age.But naked people didn't face me as a mum. And European films in particular are more open about naked people then American films. Also you see all shapes and sizes in European films not only perfect bodies.A normal love scene didn't face me either and I say, I much prefered sex then violence on TV for my children.

If its just black or white then gambling every day of the week as addiction can tear lives apart. Its a hell of a lot rarer for sex addiction and one can argue it has less impact. In saying that I would agree with TR that you don't want children getting the idea that porn is RL.

My view is that whether it be gambling, sex, violence, alcohol, drugs........ the most influence on the healthy/unhealthy factor... is the attitude of the parents.I have seen parents with a healthy attitude on gambling, but were totally f*cked up about drugs.I have seen parents with a healthy attitude on gambling and drugs... but were total boozers. I have seen parents who were great role models.... but had no idea how to discuss the important subject of sex with their kids to the point that their four kids are seriously screwed up about sex, even now.Attitude makes the very real difference.DG

are being sexualised at a very early age. They are taking ''selfies'' of their genitals on their mobile phones, having threesomes at fourteen and watch pornography. Every time a school is made aware that a student has sent a naked pic to another they must report it to the police. In some states children have been charged as child sex offenders even if the pic is of themselves....

Although gambling is deadly harmful from personal experience, I must agree with Tuscanred that it depends on how people raise their children. Wrong sexual education and/or influence from parents, peers and media can also cause serious or permanent mental and physical damages! Therefore, as parents, setting the right role model to children is paramount, because parents are the first and foremost and regular examples that kids see and learn from! In addition, giving your teenagers certain level of freedom to gain exposure to things is a good option to consider, because they would not be so curious and tempted to try new things so irresistibly if they have already had some exposure to things. Anyhow, this is merely my thoughts and I can only speak from personal experiences :-)

I have a teenager and I discuss with her, very openly the subject of sex- it can be good and bad..as for gambling advertising, I think it should not be advertised during sporting events-its like advertising an addiction -even tho help line is shown...pretty dumb if you ask me..but that's advertising!! Where's DG??? he'll give an awesome answer to this!!! FOXY

Personally i think the current outcry about Waterhouse sponsoring NRL and a few ads about having a bet is over the top. Gambling in one way or another is everywhere!!! Kids say to each other :" I bet i can run faster than you!" are they really talking about having a gamble? of course not. Every Newsagent is selling Instant lotteries, and Lotto at the front of their shops, with bright balloons to attract the kids!! There are TABs at every club and pub, multiple screens to watch dogs/horses race. The nation stops for Melbourne Cup, where 75% of people will either have a formal bet at the TAB or enter a sweep, and buy one for their kids too!! So a Bookmaker is offering odds on which team will win, who will score the first try etc big woop!! if there is a child out there really understanding how much they'll get in return for their 50c if the odds are 5/1 at $1.20 to win...they're a friggin genius! Look im not condoning it, but lets face it gambling has been around for centuries, just like smoking, and alcohol, and all the other things that are bad for us. It depends on the parenting, how exposed they are etc... as far as sex goes...watch MTV and kids shows these days...OMG its everywhere at a very young stage...again you can banish it, ignore the questions, or handle problems as they arise, and be open to discussion... We are a sporty family, follow NRL my teen watches every game, and plays 2 codes, and never once has he asked me about gambling, or complained about the ads. I think if you have that disposition you will find a way to be an addict to something, somewhere. Life is full of challenges, these are just 2 of them!

Yes I agree with Freya our children are being sexualised from a young age and you only have to watch some docos on TV and hear the way some teenagers think, that their perception of sex is very warped nowadays compared to when I was a teenager and when my parents were teenagers. I was brought up in a very modest and conservative family where sex was seen as wrong, but making love between two people who were in love with each other and had mutual respect for one another, as well as dignity, was acceptable. I was given the birds and bees talk when I was 8 years old and I always felt like I could ask my mother about puberty and sex but at the same time she put the fear of God into me should I become a teen mum or if I lost my self worth to a man and allowed my reputation to disintegrate. To a certain degree that worked a treat as I knew how to use contraception correctly and I did not have my first sexual experience until I was 17 years old and in love (or what I thought was love) with another man. Having had no regrets on any of my past sexual experiences, limited as they were, I did grow up and into an adult with the notion that a man should not gaze upon your naked body, that love was for procreation or for enjoyment only in a marriage and never with anyone else once vows were exchanged and in a way I denied myself pleasure to explore who I was sexually. I'm certainly making up for lost time in that regard and I remain in love with my husband and life partner and now have the joy of exploring who I am, rather than who society thinks I should be and that is truly liberating. So I do thank my parents in a way for safe guarding me and teaching me about self respect and integrity in me - for I would not have been able to explore who I am today and my perceptions of sex would have been grossly distorted. It's a shame really that our daughter has more of a battle on her hands in the future but its all about how hubby and I teach her about sex and her body and respect that I hope it holds her in good steed for the future. We can only but do our best and be there for her when she needs to talk to a trusted family member who will be honest and not sugar coat things. In regards to gambling on TV, that also damages our teenagers. When we arrived in Australia we were quite shocked at how many you teenagers we see in pubs and bars spending their hard earned cash on anything worth taking a bet on. It's no longer just pokies or card games at the casino for example, it's everywhere...sports betting, racing, online tournaments, Keno, a game of pool, whether someone can get someone else to do something stupid, etc. I am not a gambler but will have a flutter on the pokies about once or twice a year with my $10 bill. It's enjoying, but as you can probably tell, I am not a gambler. Gambling, like most addictions, limits ones life and though I am no stranger to addiction (nicotine), though you can't really compare the two, they are both in their own rights addictions that can control you and you have to be strong enough to rise above all of it and make the decision to not let it control you. Easier said than done. But when you are being bombarded by in essence propaganda, it's makes things very difficult for people to stray and I guess with our young people, it's up to us to educate them properly. Though they will make mistakes and they have to, the right message given is much better than ignorance. Mrs Bi

I think our kids are bombarded to sex to young the teachers are teaching about it at primary school and having sex at 14 is common let them be kids especially girls seem to be affected when we were kids were thinking about going horse riding or building a cubby but my nieces are at the same age talking about how they are going out with this boy or that boy like they are growing up to fast Im glad I have sons who with there mates are totally addicted to footballAlso gambling is exposed to them from a young age but mainly through parents ect it is to easy to put a bet on the footy or the nags ect and you are getting reminded of it all the time on the radio if you have forgotten and this is one (only one)of the reasons there is so much gambling it like all adictions starts as a bit of fun.just my opinion

We are pokies free over here and any Government that tries to change that will be lynched, we are blessed.Look as mentioned there are myriad hazards out there for the young, 30% credit cards, cigarettes, Mackas, etc.The trick is not to overly focus on the hazards but to teach hazard recognition, critical thinking and discernment skills are useful life skills way beyond the TEE exam.If our kids (and adults) can be taught to criticise and evaluate the deluge of information they face then they will make better decisions, i.e. "a stitch in time saves nine"

The most important thing is for parents to have a healthy attitude towards this and discuss important matters with the kids in regards to drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex and more importantly ask the teenagers what they think about certain ads so you get a perspective on what they think and discuss differences, that is the only way you can truly give them food for thought. Kids are only going to rebel if you say No, No way are you going to do Drugs, alcohol etc, their (most) first notion will to try and see what the fuss is about seeing as mum/dad says no, talking discussing and asking their point of view rather than put your head in the sand and hope it goes away, or banning them will only entice them to try it.

Nicely worded Dragonfyre2010! That's exactly what I meant, but you've put it down way better than my comment :-) Quietly hoping it would go away and/or banning kids from having exposure to those harmful things aren't the greatest method of raising and teaching children in this new age.

It shows well and clear in history that if one controls the masses then they set up to failure.Rather mankind (general term here not a sexist one) has the ability to use common sense and empathy to make the right decision... if the environment so shapes it.We triumph from experience..Saying that, I've seen parents do the whole sex talk and etc with their kids only to show poorly in behavior amongst their childrens friends.. like they need to belong..(that includes buying alcohol and or allowing for its consumption)

Children are basically disinterested in sex (other than a passing curiosity) until nature flips the switch . By which time you should have them all worded up. So sex on TV should really be no problem.Advertising for gambling I think is the most dangerous. This reminds me of the song by the great Melbourne band, The Saints. "Know Your product""Advertising,You're lying,You're never going to get me what I need."
