What's in a name?

February 29 2016

So I can't imagine this being a huge thread because of privacy issues - but where did your real names come from? How did your parents decide on your name? Were you named after anyone famous etc? You don't have to tell us your name or who you were even named after but could be general about it. Or if there was a particular reason you chose the name you have on here - it could be fun too. Thought it might bring up some interesting stories - why? Well my Dad picked my name because there was a luxury yacht he had always admired down the coast and the name came from there. The interesting part is that just before I was born it was sold.....and turned into a floating brothel. Anyone else been named after a floating brothel?

SoftandCurious, that's so amusing! Named after a floating brothel?! LOL! I was named after a Russian ballerina from Bolshoi Ballet. Mum loved her. I feel like a disappointment because my physique is anything but that of a Ballerina's! Harharhar!

Which was common practice way back when. Funny thing is , my father ' a pro boxer , used a alias which stuck so he lived the rest of his life known as Jack ? Similar thing happened with me , I also landed a nickname which stuck. The only person who used my real name was my mum , God rest her soul . Everyone else calls me by my nickname.. So entrenched , I probally wouldn't even answer to my birth name.

My parents knew a woman with my name and they liked it enough to give me the same one. Pretty sure the name I would've been called if I was a boy - Timothy - was also from someone they knew at the time.

When I was pregnant with our son - our daughter (6 at the time) wanted to name him Slim Shady (after the rapper Eminem) She was beside herself when we named him something different 😂 And I just realised admitting to that means admitting to having let my six year old listen to Eminem on a regular basis! I_touch - I knew you would love it! And what a cow! But hilarious!!!!!!

My name also came from both a Russian ballerina and a character in a book my mum had read. I'm not at all ballerina-like, either - but I can certainly be found in books! - Posted from rhpmobile

He could only remember that the name started with a L. I like his choice better than what it was supposed to be. My profile name.......because I am 😋

Simply because my Mum liked it. I don't think Dad had much say, after like 27 hours of labour ( I am a twin) . However I have 5 brothers, and the shortened version of my name is a guys name This has led to much confusion throughout the years

Means tender loving delicate flower 😋 I have never asked my parents why did they name me with a name that is totally opposite to my strong personality 😂 But my guess would be that it's part of my culture that girls are usually named after something soft and tender 😛 Guess I am the failure of my parents' attempt for a soft and tender daughter 😝But I do try my hardest to keep my skin soft all year round and am gentle and tender when tangling with a caring lover in bed, does that count? 😛😂 - Posted from rhpmobile

My first name and middle name as with my brother are names of from the apostles names and being the oldest l got mums maiden name to, to carry that on apparently. My brother and I were the last males in the world with our surname before we had children. l chose Adam as my real name starts with A and l really enjoy the rhythm of Adam Clayton (U2 bass player), his groove just makes me wanna move and rattles my soul a little. Cheers A.....

She told me she had picked out from when she was a girl and although she didn't have me until she was 35 she still liked it, ( an unusual late starter in that era) My father probably went along with it as it was also my grandfathers name (although he was known by a nick name) Its a simple common four letter name for a simple common man who like four letter words>
