What's in a photo

June 30 2015

Hi all, recently I've been gaining more and more interest in erotic photography. There is something really rewarding about catching a moment of passion, and as great as the memory of it is, nothing entices more than the visual. My question to you all is this, what makes a great erotic photo. I'm not talking about the standard close up of a variety of genitals, but photos closer to art that are also arousing. I'm one that leans towards its what you don't see than what you do, implied sex lets the mind work and the imagination go wild. On a side note, I am looking to expand my own portfolio, so if anyone is interested in taking part, or having me shoot a party or event than I am more than willing :)

Hints, suggestions, details, promises, glimpses and possibilities, wrapped in pretty lights and colours. I agree with you Poly on letting the mind work and not feeding it sex in bite-sized pieces.

I adore black and white and the sensual photos that leave something to the imagination. I love kissing shots as well that are tastefully done

B&W appeals and so does the idea of highlighting aspects of pics like lips, eye colour, props etc. I'd love to see work that includes the ability of the model to remain anonymous. Peachy

Your pic looks yummy but I can't get a closer look? :-) While I know you're having me on, I'm totally going to take the chance to expand on that, LOL. ;-) .Poly, I was thinking of a theme where it doesn't look like people are trying to hide their face. But they are. Something that could work for profile pics. It's a fascination of mine, to see how well people do with that.

Erotica has many forms, it can catch the intimacy off love, the beauty of human form, or essence of lust. Good erotic photography should combine all 3 to be valid in my view, to miss any is to turn into into something less, like porn, or simple portraiture. Photography is an art and hence is subjective to the viewer. As an artist you are bound by your own sense of style and should not fight this in an attempt to please the audience. You must develop your style by studying other works, knowing your medium, experimentation, and a willingness to step beyond convention. You will not find many people willing to partake unless you show a professional detachment from the proceeding, you must disappear if you wish to catch the best moments. And please for god's sake turn off the direct flash. One of the best investments you can put into you equipment bag is a remote flash. You are not serious until you have one and know why you must have one. It is art, the camera captures buckets of light, you only need enough to define your moment. Use the RAW (high dynamic range, stores the raw data direct from the CCD) mode on your camera, turn off all the auto settings, except if you want focus, F-Stop and ISO. (if you dont know what all that means then spend a day learning) Most of the Auto settings in the camera are post capture processing (photoshop built into the camera) so don't let the camera do this work for you. Do it your self on a PC.

I like photos that capture the moment. they won't always be neat, pretty or pretentious but they will be real - Posted from rhpmobile

Much prefer suggestive rather than explicit, you can let your imagination take over.......

I go for sophisticated raunch I've been told lol. Less is more. Always leaving something to the imagination. Why flaunt everything you have? Then there's nothing left when you meet or nothing left to imagine with...and the imagination is endless :)

I think group sex photography misses the mark most of the time. Often you see these pics of a group of people, all in one shot, flash lighting up everything. When I see these I feel like an outsider looking in (especially because they are usually from a higher vantage point). Rather then catch every act I'd prefer to focus on one person and their experience. Yes there is a room full of people, but that is background to what is happening to you and how you feel in that moment. Much more relatable and I think a better representation of what it feels like to be part of the action - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'Freya70' Of Helmut Newton,Ronert Mapplethorpe are worthwhile looking t..they were masters xxFreya Not a fan of these two, and many of the modern contemporaries for there focus on the body perfect. This in my view detracts from the ideal of what is erotic. We don't need to be perfect to be sexy, beauty can be found in ordinary everyday people. When I do photos for someone I guarantee them that I will capture what makes them sexy, I will make them a object of lust and desire. I will say that without knowing what they look like, as looks have nothing to do with being sexy. These artists border on the line of commercial art, not that there is anything wrong with that, but its easy to create salable imagery when you sell the ideal of perfection. For me there is no erotic quality in their photography as part of being turned on is the concept of attainability, something far from reality in these artist's work.

I had photos taken several years ago as a subject. One of my girlfriends is a photographer and wanted practice, and she asked if i would be her model :) She took all sorts of shots. The person getting photos taken need to be comfortable getting these sorts of photo's taken then that will show through to the end shot. We had fun with the shoot and it shows in the photos. I was in all sorts of positions for her to take different shot's. I didn't have any naked photos, i was in all sorts of lingerie though these photos turned out great, i would defiantly do it again.

There is a lot to be said for classy erotic pics, very hot. And I love black and white. I love seeing a nice photo of someone that leaves more to the imagination, rather than letting everything hang out. I just think time and place but that is my opinion. - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'CucknShells' I used to have a Tumblr account but I ended up closing it down as I spent too much time on it. There's some awesome visual erotica on Tumblr

I also agree with the less is more concept. Usually much sexier and more enticing than a close-up cock in vag / arse shot, although having said that I have seen some very good close-ups, I think lighting and the technical aspects would play a big part in that. And another fan of black and white here too....or a really washed out colour palette and certain parts highlighted in brighter colour to stand out. I saw that technique used in a movie recently, not in an erotic way but it was very effective.
