When I grow up

March 30 2016

What is your dream job? I'm at a crossroads in my life, I'm nearly 38 years old and I still can't decide on the one role that will be my forever. So - when you grow up, what would you love to do? So many people work to support themselves but never end up doing what they thought. If you are already living the dream work wise but you don't want us knowing what you do - just state it as your dream anyway 😉

I have had two different careers ,both I was passionate about. I achieved what I wanted to achieve . In 2006 I received a Churchill Fellowship for my work in the Arts and Disability. Now I am semi retired ,I just work two days a week supporting kids with learning disabilities ...I love what I do now.I am not responsible for anyone else's work or life and I get to hang out with kids that surprise me,everyday. What are you passionate about Soft? Follow that, follo your bliss.xxFreya

Just ask Mrs Q. As for dream jobs, not having a job and maintaining my current lifestyle would be a dream.

When I moved across the ditch to Australia, I was faced with several options...one to work in a high-income field that I really did not enjoy due partially to the stress and cutthroat environment or pursue what I considered to be my dream "job" working in an rather unique outdoor sporting environment that is comprised of some of the nicest people I have ever met. I opted for the first, was nearly immediately hired by one of Australia's top firm and did kick some very long goals. In my limited spare time, I started to build the business that I loved and slowly but surely it grew. The market crash in 2011 put the crunch on the job however by the my dream "job" was up and growing. In 2012, tossed the suit and tie over the back of a chair for the last time...well, as a work kit anyway, and went at my dream job as close to full time as I wanted it to be. It's a lot less money but oh well...I truly enjoy every day. Bottom line....do what you love and you will never work another day in your life!

When I grow up I want to be famousI want to be a starI want to be in the movies Nah, I still don't know what I want to be besides what I am. Mind you, volunteering has been a thought lately. Something productive, rewarding and purposeful. Hm, cheers, Peachy

Wanted to be a lawyer 😋 because I have a huge love for law and wish I could bring justice to those who deserve it! But things changed and I didn't get to live out my dream, although I did end up working for a bunch of lawyers, which somehow made me pleased that I didn't become a lawyer 😂😂 What I had worked as, doing now, and will be working as in the future, will all be completely different to what I had dreamed about doing when I was a teen :) - Posted from rhpmobile

True! But unfortunately anything I have a passion for requires extensive study and cost, so I can't just wing it on a whim 😉 Sweet - I've worked for lawyers and have a passion for law also. I've been thinking about enrolling for second semester. The key is to pick a field that you're passionate about (even if it limits your earning potential). I just helped my step sister win a complex parenting and property matter and revelled in the research and preparation of it. Freya - I've too many passions which is the problem. Law is one, art therapy is another (which is about 9 years of study), and speech pathology (medical subjects, one full time degree only available and small employment prospects for graduates). I started studying teaching when my daughter was a toddler and topped the class by a mile. But realised near the end of the first year that the politics of the education department would cause me to lose my job in the first year by fighting against the system lol! It's obvious I want work in a service role. Even with law I would probably end up in family law (very emotional) or as a barrister because I'd be accountable to the crown and impartial. My issue has always been that once a career becomes manageable and comfortable I get bored. Once the steep learning as stopped (even though there is always more to learn) I've found the lack of challenge to be my downfall.

I wish I had done a trade cause they are the ones in short supply at present and are raking in the money I enter Uni to study Arts/Architecture which was my dream job, however the reality was that its job that is over rated in as much that only few make a great deal of money out of it, most struggle along, depending if they work for themselves or a firm, so I switched to Law, it was a sad decision to make but one made with a dose of reality. I graduated after I did my Masters. I was lucky that I landed a great job which required my law degree, although I wasn't actually practicing law, however after 12 years of working for the same Government Dept I was made redundant in February, no warning, just shunted abruptly along with several others. We were told our jobs were being outsourced due to State funding cuts, very common with State Government jobs now Since then I've applied for probably over 200 jobs, easily. I'm pretty multi skilled, so I've applied for all types of jobs as I'm supporting rent as well as mortgage repayments as I'm in the middle of building a house. I've had 3 interviews, in 6 weeks, 2 unsuccessful and one I'm waiting a decision on Its so frustrating. Employers do take their time getting back to you (if they do and most don't) agencies ask you to come in and do all their testing to get you on their books for any temp or contract work but with no guarantee of work even though they advertise there is is job going, to get you in. I went for a interview where the main topic of conversation was that I was over qualified and the potential employer was concerned I wouldn't stay in the position, so I have now dumbed down my resume and removed my Masters (never thought Id live in a country where Id be dumbing down my academic achievements). With another interview the employer was concerned about where I lived as he stated Id have a bit of a commute each day to the office. (Its Sydney everyone commutes) When I replied that for my previous job, I commuted a round trip of nearly 120 kms per day and thought nothing of it, (or I could catch a train) this seem to bother him. I have now taken my address off my resume So my advice to anyone , is firstly if you have a job at present, be grateful and treasure it, its a tough market out there . A University education means bugger all. Think twice about returning to study as its very expensive and doesn't mean it will improve your job prospects. Remove all information from your resume that can be used against you like age, dates references or where you live or even your quals, if you think its going to work against you and be prepared for a lot of rejection as you are competing in a huge employers choice market. Soft, The reality is that more than likely you will not work your dream job. In todays market you will need to incredibly multi skilled and adaptable and more than likely you will do many different jobs in your life. You may need to upskill but returning to Uni is not necessarily the answer. Consider trades and bear in mind that in 10-15 years many jobs as we know them now , will not exist, do you research and keep applying. It is a numbers game. And don't give up, stay strong and resilient, but yep it is hard to do :( And if you're one of those people who is doing what they love and being paid for it, I envy you

Budding songwriter here. But I have no intention of becoming an artist, or performing. Not that I have the vocal or other skills to anyway. But there's something about keeping the anonymity :) (And no-one *really* knows or cares who the background songwriters are, I'll just take the paycheck thanks). Frankly, any income allowing me to be self-employed, to not have to deal with [censored] [expletives] [profanity] types of employers, is all good. Especially if I have the flexibility of travel.

Working with animals, I have volunteered in animal welfare for over 30 years off & on. Can be heartbreaking but is also so rewarding. I actually work in Admin and work for a friend so it's probably my second best job. - Posted from rhpmobile

... none of us have "grown up" yet! I think I really like domestic stuff - cooking, cleaning, laundry. I have thought of starting a private business cleaning house for a select few clientele, and taking on the occasional housesitting and caring for pets left behind at home when the owners are out on vacation or business trips. Hmm... maybe I could wear a French Maid uniform too... Might be good business acumen...
