As with any form of sport or exercise, the only way to get better at something is to do that particular thing. The major muscles worked are the pecs (chest) and to a lesser extent (triceps and biceps). There is no need to go smashing more weights to target these muscles to improve on pushups, a simple change in angle will suffice (any PT worth his / her weight should have been able to tell you this). If you are struggling to do girl pushups (on your knees) then perhaps consider using a bench to place your hands on, whilst keeping your feet on the floor. Doing this reduces the effect gravity will have on the exercise by changing the lever angle that your body creates. The higher the bench, the easier the pushups are. Gradually decrease the size of the bench you are using as your pushups ability increases. Soon you'll be so advanced you'll be making it harder by placing your feet on the bench instead ;)Good luck babe and you know how to get hold of me if you want any more help. x

Hello Halcyon: Being able to do a couple of "Push ups" is a relatively easy thing to learn. I am interested to know why you PT can't assist you. Having said that, I have met with some wrists which were medically unsuitable for the activity May I email you with a few ideas? caveman

Hi! Hun :0 It can be frustrating that's for sure when you're doing all you can and don't seem to be getting there..The 1st thing that came to mind is you've the use and experience of a Personal Trainer why don't you ask them ? They should know .. If you don't wear wrist supports it probably will be a good idea to get and use some..They will give you that little extra help in doing push ups too.. A fun way would be to lie on your back get your Playmates to lay over you when you've got your arms extended but elbows bent a little .You use them as weights your Partner can help with the spring action by using their feel to push up and down... This will exercise your arms muscles upper and lower ..If you tire they fall on you then you can enjoy very sensual kissing more he!he!..Enjoy Lu :)..

Having said that, I have met with some wrists which were medically unsuitable for the activity May I email you with a few ideas? caveman My PT focuses on my whole body fitness. I don't want to waste the sessions just building strength for push ups, but would like to do some stuff outside of the gym to work up to them. Any help would be hugely appreciated :D Thanks x

What you said about pecs, biceps and triceps is interesting. I think my pecs have always been the problem - very, very weak. My arms seem to respond to weights really well but I never seem to make much progress with my pecs. I shall follow your advice, thank you x

There are many forms of push ups, so maybe if you start off with the varied and less strenous ones til you get stronger in the wrists or other areas. you can do what they call ladies push ups, instead of the whole body it is from the knees, or even easier still is upright, a distance away from the wall and do them that way, , making it a bit harder each time it gets easier to do that particular exercise, and gradually before you know it you will have progressed to the point you can do the proper one.

i find to start up, standing at the kitchen bench is easier... you're on your feet and can stand back or as close in to the bench as your comfortable with... then as he said, go lower and lower...kitchen table then coffee table perhaps then you're good to go girl! down on the floor or all fours! lol

Rather than wrist supports, I would suggest making a fist, and doing the pushups from your knuckles i.e. the fist against the ground. Despite what the movies say as if it is a punishment, it is stronger for your wrist because you don't have to bend your hand. (I often get the sore wrist problem, but doing them this way I don't get any injury).I would also suggest building up to the pushups by not doing 'girl pushups' off your knees, but always doing proper pushups - and just changing your angle like Insight79 said. Even if you start by leaning against a wall, then pushing off say, the kitchen bench, then a chair, then eventually the floor. The reason is that as well the push movement, the pushup requires a lot of work from your abdominal region to hold your torso straight. Doing girl pushups you won't strengthen any of that area.Good luck. (IIRC there are some good 'how to learn to pushup' resources out there on the web)

Abstain for awhile, and when you're so F%&*%$ desperate for a long, hard, noisy, sweaty screamining orgiasmic fuck, climb aboard a hard dick and push it and push it and push it some more oh oh oh, and if he cries out, push it some more oh oh oh oh. See, make push ups and sex fun. Don't take push ups and sex too seriously, otherwise they turn into fuckups.

Done, post run this morning. About a 60 degree angle from the ground, good plank position, hands a bit wider than my shoulders but shoulders forward over my hands. I could really feel it, and started to isolate the muscles. Thanks peeps! All the tips have been great :)

These would keep your wrists straight during the push-up movement but it would not allow you to build to handstand push-ups. To strengthen your wrists, you might try squeezing squash balls. You can do this frequently, at any time of day. It doesn't need to be part of your structured routine.

No I cant do them and never could....as I was young I was always wondering why I couldnt do push ups or situps...until I found out. Everything what pulls my wrists is not posssible for a long time either. You just get so used to your body so you never think it is something wrong. And I mean there is nothing wrong with an amzing body, the body just made other helpful things to compat this deformaty and its emazing my hand and wrists function. You will do other things to get fit......lol. Beautiful what ever you do. Cheers Litonya

Maybe get some small exercise weights, that have enough weight to work your wrists and forearms. Then stand facing a wall and do vertical push ups against the wall slowly working further out from the wall to increase the pressure on your arms and shoulders .Then move to the floor on your hands and knees, slowly moving your knees further back again to increase the strength on your arms/shoulders.In no time you will be able to do pushups :)Hope that helpsCC

I (mrs pp) just didn't feel confident with push ups or the Chaturanga yoga pose. So I practiced heaps with planks, wall push ups and the kitchen bench and built up the strength gradually.

Ms Halycon, This is an easy one. Women have different shoulders to men...this makes a very big difference. A good way to demonstrate this is go and throw a rock or ball...then compare it to a male throwing. Females throw slow with not very good coordination or strength. Males throw faster, its coordinated and the action flows. Simple, men (are meant) to have wider clavicles to their waistline....and women narrower clavicles to their hip/waist line. If you want to go way back to pre-historic times...men have the strong throwing ability for hunting while women have the kids lol. Secondly....if you're carrying extra weight this will obviously make it much harder. If you look at the fitness girls they concentrate on keeping their weight down which will obviously make it easier to control body weight and do a push up. Thirdly....'tension'...if you have strength you can successful control and hold tension. You say you're weak...this is because you can't hold tension on your arms for any length of period. If your PT is as good as me (which i doubt lol :)....ask him/her if you can do some strengthing/tension exercises.....for example sit on a bench (back straight) and hold a 2.5 or 5 kilo weight plate with your hands. Hold it there for as long as you're comfortable to start with then over time hold it for longer periods. You can stand and do this if you want but you will probably find sitting is better or easier. Contact me if you need help

... then do the next best thing: bench press. You'll be gripping a bar (make sure the weight of the bar presses into the palm of your hand when you do so), that takes a lot of the pressure off of your wrists as it allows you to keep them straight. Also you can adjust the weight of the bar to raise it up in increments until you get to about 50% of your body weight. If you can do 3 or 4 presses with 50% of your bodyweight but still can't do a push up then you ought to consult your doctor.

This is simply a matter of practice, boys play more one-handed throwing sports at school than girls do and that is the ONLY reason why we generally tend to throw better. Whatever the reason you find it difficult to do push ups it is in no way related to your being a woman. Goodness me, I really thought people had gotten beyond this sort of thinking. I have a degree in Sports Engineering from the University of Bath (big sporting Uni in England, they love that shit there) but I didn't need that to know the answer to this one: Google is your friend folks! If you don't believe me then check out this or any number of other articles on the matter by searching "throwing like a girl/boy":http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2012/09/back-to-throwing-like-a-girl/262611/One good suggestion Enigmaoflove makes is to increase your core strength, though he suggests a rather a strange exercise to do this :-S The generally accepted easiest way to increase core strength is just to practice doing "the plank" for increasing variables of time. Just google it and you can't go wrong and please, please... Take what you're told by PT's and gym rats with a pinch of salt, just do your own research or ask your doctor, you're less likely to be told total tosh then.

Take what you're told by PT's and gym rats with a pinch of salt, just do your own research or ask your doctor, you're less likely to be told total tosh then. You're entitled to your say but i'm also entitled to clarify myself. No where in my piece did i mention women can't throw or that brave_heart can't throw. I only illustrated the physical difference in the male and female frames. I'm not going to breakdown the physiological argue, but yes men do throw with more strength and coordination than females and there is a physical difference whether you want there to be or not. An olympic female discus, shotput and javelin thrower can't throw the same distances than the males (and isn't expected to be able to and that isn't a bad or wrong thing)....because there clearly is a physiological and strength difference. 'You' are the one that has brought up the sexiest comment and/or made it sexiest....i didn't. The core strength training comes from an excellent world known fitness program...Kyle Leon's Maximise your muscle program. He does excellent core training to strengthen body parts. Human movement and physical science is a great broad fountain of learning and information. There are a lot of qualified and experienced trainers out there and its best to have an open mind and not be narrowed minded or an expert. We are entitled to clearly disagree on the physiological component of this topic and that is fine, but i won't except my piece to be judged by anyone as being sexiest. God made us physically different for 'many reasons'...if you have an issue with that you'll have to take it up with him...to finish on a lighter note lol.
