Why do women wear dresses

July 02 2015

I know it is probably a stupid question, just driving along today and my mind was wandering. Suddenly started thinking "why do women wear dresses". I mean who came up with it and why & for what reason. Why women and not men (except for the Scottish that is). I'm talking the norm. What was the original purpose of the dress (for a woman). Why can't men also where dresses, or a mini skirt into town during the day. (I know they can but I am talking about the norm for all men not just a few into that sort of thing). Why aren't all clothes be for everyone and just made in different shapes, colours and sizes. Why is my beer empty. So many questions ?

In the good old "olden days" when huge dresses were the norm and out in the bush where underwear wasn't worn. The girls could just spread their legs, lift the skirt up above their ankles, do a semi squat and wee without having to go to a toilet. Not sure what they did for number 2s ... that could get messy!!! Anyway I remember being told that by a teacher in primary school. Have no idea if it was true or not. LG

Quoting 'xKiwiBredx' ... access of course If men had a skirt, just need to lift it up and whip one up there, no need to unzip, drop trow etc. Easy access for men and women. Sorry does not answer the question. If it was for easy access, both would wear mini skirts

Why would men need to wear dresses? It seems that women wore dresses for sanitary reasons, but why would men need to wear them, when pants protect their personal's and fit their body better, when hunting for food, riding a horse as it offered better protection. wernt dresses also long? making it harder to piss, as pulling down the dress allowed it to touch the ground, getting it dirty and in range of the pissing area, and it being long means it would take a lot more work to pull it up, then needed to pull a pair of pants slightly below the persons waist?

Wether men are wearing skirts or not, gaining access isn't necessarily a given either way, is it?

I don't wear dresses or skirts unless I also have leggings or stockings/pantyhose on also. Unless the dress is long. I hate certain aspects of my legs so I always cover them up in public. And then hope nobody notices when I'm naked!

Culturally instilled conventions, there are many cultures where men and women do not have a distinct dress code. Why do girls like pink and boys blue, when 100 years ago pink was the boys colour. We are enslaved to the attitudes and requirements of society, its not law but the backlash of breaking cultural rules is enough to stop most from publicly breaking the rules. THe rules are arbitrary and are not based on any pragmatic reasoning.

stop posting my thoughts!!!!! Easy access is damn straight...it's so that you can sneak up on them, while cooking or whatever, bend them over the bench with a handful of hair, and run your fingertips lightly up their thigh before teasing their perineum's making them squirm....... - Posted from rhpmobile

In some cultures they still do...Kilts,sarongs, etc..In 1984 Jean Paul Gautier tried to introduce the Man Skirt..it caused a sensation but it just didnt take...the trouser as we know it with a fly ,only dates back to the 19th century...women can wear anything, lucky us ...but the ridiculous fashions of the past, hooped skirts, hobbled skirts, long skirts in general were not just practical but reflected women's place in society..the middle class and aristocracy had servants only poor women worked,..it wasn't until post ww1 that women started to wear short skirts and cut their hair ...so SG,find yourself a kilt for winter,a sarong for summer and change your name to Jock- Ketut 😝xx Freya

the answer until you wear one Sad thing is you'll never feel the freedom of a dress with stay up stockings and g string. The feel of the breeze on your bare arse. Even when its cold. Like most things, you take things for granted and you full time ladies probably have glossed over that feeling but its one that i love and always appreciate. Annie xx

Feel very sexy. I don't usually wear them to work as pants are more practical. In my private life though, I look to wearing dresses as often as I can, they make me feel incredibly sexy. Now, if sir_stir did that to me in my kitchen he'd get a knee to the balls (don't ask) however if he did it anywhere else, oh my.....! That is exactly why I wear dresses, fingers can run up my leg and lots of teasing can occur. and I also get to show some leg, who doesn't love that? Mary xx

Women look awesome in dresses, showing off their shapely legs and lovely butts But I think some women would look better if they gave dresses a miss. And MEN? In a dress?? With hairy legs and knobbly knees??? Thank god we are not exposed to that gruesome sight...provided we avoid Scotland, lol. the Nurturer :)

The explanation below was one I found on a website called "Ask Historians", & was posted by a person who "majored in Classics in College & had a special interest in ancient clothing." "From a western (Euro-centric) view, trousers were worn by people the Greeks considered barbarians, like the Bactrians and Armenians. They were also worn by their arch enemies, the Persians. The Romans carried on this tradition. They considered trousers effete and barbarous (Lever, James. Costume and Fashion: A Concise History. Thames and Hudson, 1995, 2010). Eventually, as Rome took over more of the world, trousers were more practical for men when riding horses, working, and for warmth. Byzantine (Eastern Roman Empire) court dress still consisted of robes, but trousers being more often worn by men, since they were more practical. When you look at what men were wearing it was often hose with a short or long robe over it. Sometimes two pairs of hose were worn: a tight under pair and a looser over pair. Eventually, this became "long johns" and trousers. As for women, in many ways before modern tampons and sanitary napkins, skirts made much more sense. As a modern woman, I can attest to this. If one menstruates for five days a month, it is cleaner and easier to wear a skirt/dress compared to pants. For woman, urination is also more practical with a skirt. Men can "just whip it out," women have to squat. Also, if a woman is pregnant, a skirt or dress that can be easily adjusted makes more sense. Eventually, what is common becomes traditional. From a Biblical point of view (Deut 22:5) “The woman shall not put on [the weapons/armor of a warrior], neither shall a [warrior] put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.” This came to mean that a woman should not wear the clothing of a man, i.e., trousers. Hence, we get a traditional view that trousers are for men, skirts for women, (and kilts for the Scots)." So there seems to be Cultural, Religious, Practical & possibly environmental reasons why "women wear dresses"! Sounds logical & feasible to me. Thought -provoking topic SINGLE_GUY4U , well done! KK x - Posted from rhpmobile Thanks KK, makes perfect sense now. (probably could have searched myself but did not think of it, remembered it checking the forums so thought I would ask / share. Henna. No I was not thinking of wearing one myself (I am a bit too shy / self conscious). But if it was the norm though, who knows?. It was just one of the silly thoughts that go through my mind when driving for several hours (Did 600km for work that day and my mind was wandering). Having just said that I just remembered dressing up as a French maid for a themed party years ago, damn stockings and heals were a real bitch

Access. We had to do what men wanted for thousands of years. Suits us too. Men in dresses? Depends on the style ... Lace , heels and stockings.. I'm not sold.. Togas work better. Kilt when sitting up the hill with legs spread ... Getting there ... as long as they keep their mouths shut. - Posted from rhpmobile
