Will Smith v Chris Rock. Your thoughts?

March 28 2022

Is he rightfully protecting his woman? Can he not take a joke? Did Chris Rock cross the line? Is Hollywood in such a bubble where the rich can assault another and police don't get involved? Was it staged and "fake news" and nobody was even slapped? Would he have attacked Ricky Gervais? Why didn't they walk him out of the arena? Feminists on twitter are calling Will Smith's behaviour "toxic masculinity" - agreed or not? "Love will make you do crazy things" said Smith in his acceptance speech... which is also what abused women hear from their husbands... thoughts?

It looks staged to me, which is a new low in itself and I feel most abhorrent. If it was real then Chris was in the wrong then Will was in the wrong. Putting myself in their shoes, if I had made a joke that really hurt someone’s loved one and they slapped me for it I’d likely understand and apologise. On the other hand, if someone shamed someone I love then I’m damn sure I’d feel like doing what Will did. I’d hope I’d find another way but if I did lose my cool then an apology would be following. Something about sinning and casting stones may be appropriate here.

It looks staged, (and it was on, of course, a "stage") but also regarding apparent twitter hints before and after, and even slow motion. Of course there's some real history and circumstances but it couldn't have done otherwise. A random slap with no reason on stage would have been literally slapstick. If it's real you'll find out soon enough as there might be some legal dramas etc. If it's staged, then I don't see the big deal because don't these people stage things for a living? Even if they try to pass off something that was staged as real (which is what happens with a lot of reality TV shows, and the audience apparently loves it). Does it matter that the audience/viewer is not notified as such? Or just for discussion/ratings, when many people including myself would not have otherwise paid much attention to what happened at the Oscars? Sometimes trying to pass off something as real, or at the very least ambiguous, is actually better for public attention, for example Blair Witch Project (not quite related subject material though lol).

I wouldn’t have had any idea about this incident . Upon reading this forum post ,I took to YouTube . I think sadly it was a joke-so called -executed in extremely bad taste . Shaming , bullying someone over their appearance be it their size , their nose , what they wear and in this case alopecia, is never acceptable. On the other hand, violent behaviours in retaliation are also unacceptable. It’s Hollywood - it’s creating sensation and even us RHPers are discussing it . Those in the spotlight are human, they make mistakes ,they act impulsively and suffer from foot in mouth, as we all do on occasions. Evolved adults need to be accountable. Sincere apologies from both parties seemed to be in order and everyone can move on until the next big thing. Ax

I would hope my husband would stand up for me in that circumstance. Assault was too far though. I understand why he saw red, I am the same when it comes to my hubby and kids. Calling it toxic masculinity is bullshit. Women frequently assault other women. Is that toxic femininity? This situation has nothing to do with domestic violence and drawing parallels to it is bullshit.

It’s probably staged but it’s made for some great Twitter entertainment and I’m sure their rating slump was greatly improved. Staged or not though it’s way out of line, imagine just walking up and slapping someone like that when you don’t like what they’re saying, we’d constantly be beating the shit out of each other these days, which is probably what they want. Just look at the hatter being allowed against Russian and non participants in the covid experiment. Humanity is on the brink...

And everybody there allowed him to walk up, assault a man, sit back down unobstructed then collect a major award. Absolutely sick, what are they encouraging with such behaviour?

Looked staged to me. The worst thing about the whole saga was that it appears it's ok to physically assault someone if you're a celebrity. A comedian makes a joke (albeit not his best), offence was taken, a peripheral person to the joke jumps up and slaps said comedian..... WTAF?? Then goes onto to win an Oscar.... 2022, nothing suprised me anymore 🤦

If it connected it was nothing more than a fly swat. A proper slap would have sent the guy staggering or knocked him out. Watch this space, next main event in boxing will be these two. I suspect this is a promotion for an upcoming circus event. - Mr Bee.

I think good on Will, stood up for his missus. These so called comedians get up and take cheap pot shots at people to get a laugh. Seems to me fair enough he got a slap across the chops, Chris Rocks happy to move on, let’s move on.

I question why the lawyers or producers of the Oscars did not do a screen assessment of hosts content prior? If they did, Chris/other prior hosts wouldn't offend or make insulting slurs that are offensive and distasteful. After all there are teens/children do watch the OSCARS. It is broadcasted world wide. It was bound to come in one form or another by what Will did (react and slap) or some other form. IE Social media. Ms Foxy 🤷‍♀️

It's lucky he will never go on the Jeff Ross Roast show,, having 8 people tell jokes about him, and everyone laughing,, would he get up and slap all the people,,, Dwayne Johnson ( ROCK) was in the audience,, didn't see Will go smack him too

To be honest ... lm over the whole thing. Before this ' l liked almost everything about Will Smith.. but seeing this has me thinking otherwiise... l dont believe it was staged , but it was total overkill if you ask me. Mind you ' i never really had much time for Chris Rock as a presenter anyway.. Theres a fine line between a insult and something funny...

I thought it was disgusting behaviour from Will Smith. He was laughing at the joke until Jada gave him the death stare. Then he basically coward hits Chris Rock. He could have powerfully stood up said his peace and walk out for the night rather than resort to violence. That would have been far more powerful. Just curious, but we have a friend who suffers from alopeica. She has not had a hair on her body since she was 17. She is now 44. She has no 5 o'clock shadow on her head (or anywhere else) ever and she does not shave. She wears the most amazing wigs that you cannot pick. Jada clearly had a decent 5 o'clock shadow. Just wondering.

If it was not Chris Rock telling the joke but someone more intimidating I doubt Smith would have done a thing Sad part is till he saw Jada roll her eyes he did not care

Hot take here: joke was in poor taste, but nothing compared to say Ricky Gervais. Other things going on that contributed to the slap and just the last straw? Shouldn’t have put his hands on the man, end of, but only Will Smith knows what was going on in his mind there. Weirdest thing was the initial laughter then the acceleration into getting up and smacking the “comedian”. Had he grabbed the mic off him and shut him down with a comment instead of a slap, would have been classier.

Amazing how many people condemn Will Smith for slapping a guy but are very happy to watch him punch the crap out of someone in the Ali movie or shoot 100s of people in his other movies

Too much attention given to it when more important matters are around. Looked like a fake slap to be honest but the 'woke' culture critics who protested the so called violence forget that the most successful movies are the violent and graphic ones. Not condoning them but if he's canned for doing that then Hollywood should just shut up shop.

Celebrities are in your face whether you like it or not, they are unavoidable, yet they only want adulation. There's no escaping the vanity of those craving attention while their egos are fed by a population too lazy or stupid to switch them off. It's bizarre that Smith and his wife are more than comfortable airing their dirty laundry when the networks are happy to pay but a joke is enough to bring about an assault. The thing about defending people honour is that it requires they had some in the first place.

Will Smith needs help, he is struggling, words About his wife haircut doesn’t require violence to a person, There is a line as too how you treat my wife, if I slapped someone for making a joke about her hairstyle, she would be very disappointed in me.

Very simple staged or not Chris Rock crossed the line its generally accepted you can have a crack at anyone but you leave their family out of it.

If it was staged, which wouldn't surprise me. The world of Celebrities is a world of attention seeking for own gratification or publicity stunts. I think it was a joke literally, if it wasn't staged. Chris Rock didn't offend her by slut shaming with her extra marital fun or even being rude. Will had no right to slap him over that, even if he was standing up for his wife. He could have yelled out only and that would have been enough. If there is an argument while out at a bar the security don't leave you in the same room after a flare up and Will should have been escorted out. Making an excuse, when making an apology crosses out the apology because you aren't "man" enough to own your mistakes. We all fuck up and lash out but own the fact you are human, you will make mistakes. But making an excuse for your actions shows you don't acknowledge the fault.

Not likely it was staged considering the fall out. Will's been banned from the Oscars for 10 years. I did wonder when I first saw it because his initial reaction was laughter. There's bound to be more to the story that we will ever know, we can only presume.

It was a joke. That's what comedians do they take the piss out of people and life in general. And if you can't have a laugh at life, or at your own expense, then your world is a sad place.

violence is never acceptable! as a guy it has been accepted that we are in control of our emotions and should refrain from actions like that. For too long violence has been used as a control method, not on. The real issue I think is that Will laughed at the joke, then looked at her and saw she wasn't happy, so overcompensated in the extreme. Sad really.

Did people end up figuring it out? The oscars was sponsored by Pfizer and biotech this year, apparently cases of alopecia are on the rise and expected to keep trending that way, creating a huge market increase, *almost double by the looks of it. So why not pay a couple of actors for the best kind of advertising you can get? Well played big pharma, the world ate it up and awareness was raised about alopecia. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 *The Global Alopecia Market size was estimated at USD 2,796.90 million in 2021 and expected to reach USD 3,020.51 million in 2022, and is projected to grow at a CAGR 8.17% to reach USD 4,480.88 million by 2027

Will Smith was stressed out, gaslit and exhausted and he fucked up, sent to his auntie’s and further had to deal with how his son reacted online. Chris Rock didn’t know about hair problems and nothing was said during the rehearsal the night before. Chris Rock still protected Will like a mate, nothing fake or staged, also Will wasn’t even looking at the eye roll 🙄 as most are saying it was what prompted Will. Will resigned from the industry, took to rehab and pulled his boy in tight and some time together it may be all they have, I believe. Mado Mado, Tara xx
