Women's AFL

February 03 2017

The AFL Women's league kicks off today and I'm really excited ! I think not only will it be great for the game but I'm thinking and hoping it could really turbo charge women's professional sport. Perhaps it might even be the door opener for AFL overseas. In my sons footy club the girls teams are well supported. Thoughts ?

Yep I think it's great also, the few games I've seen have impressed me. Living in a small town with my young bloke playing Auskick we have always had girls playing to help with numbers. - Posted from rhpmobile

Never been a big footy person (I'm told....weird for a Victorian) but I think this is great for women's sport and show's kids of both sexes that anything is possible - Posted from rhpmobile

It's a quintessentially Australian game so great to see the women's league start up. A couple of our girls played at school and the local club has an U16 girls team so it is on the rise, hopefully the cats get a team in next year :) Mr D - Posted from rhpmobile

I don't think it will do much to get AFL interest overseas. Q: how many NWHL games has anyone over here watched? A: what is the NWHL? I hope for their sake they can build crowds QUICKLY before the money runs out and they have to operate on a commercial basis on their own merits with a product people want to pay money to see.

If the uniforms were similar to the girls in the lingerie football league in the US, I reckon they would get a lot of followers. 😍

Well the first game was a sellout although I believe it was free entry, still, pretty positive having a lockout crowd. I guess we'll be able to gauge real interest when we see how many turn up for the double headers with the men's game (paid ticket). I thought it was a great game, much fiercer than I expected, they could teach the men a thing or two on tackling intensity ! The throwing instead of bouncing the ball was bullshit and I'm not sure the shorter quarters is warranted, but anyway was a great start. Freo plays today, they will be my team for now until Richmond joins the competition.

Intense is how the Mr described it, I'm not into football myself. But I love the shorts. I know, I'm shallow. :-Peachy

Oh goody, I love having a footy hubby to share his pov. He mentions the shorter quarters being understandable due to the hot weather. I think he totally agrees on the intensity of play. But does not get your mention of throwing rather than bouncing the ball. I'd enjoy seeing you two argue it out. Now it is truly the AFL isn't it. Peachy

At stoppages and the centre bounce the umpires throw the ball up not bounce it ?

There is a joke and serious side to women playing football.First the joke----Unfair advantage they have a built in ball holder for a chest mark. Now the serious------Any hit to a breast can bring on cancer my cousin got elbowedin a game of hockey and died 3 years later as breast cancer had spread.Zena is fiction, GI Jane was fiction and so is wounder woman.Women in the military is costing thousands per month but is covered up by women political figures in the US government .Hell knows what we tax payers pay for equality in Australia butonly know I like a woman to feel like a woman, look like a woman. If women want to play rough or be in the army then tough luck ifthey die for it also there joints don't like the hammering either.

Well the womens league has been run and won by the most deserving team and female coached as well ! Congrats to all ! I thought the footy was pretty good, ball skills are definitely lacking but the attitude was awesome, the men could learn a thing or two on tackling, smothering and barely controlled aggression. What has amazed me though is the game is kicking a lot of goals outside footy, particularly with same sex acceptance, breaking female stereotypes all over the place, can't be a bad thing.I seriously hope the game builds on the good fan base and can start ticketing and holding it's own, it's a good thing for women wether you like football or not.
