a compliment from a stranger bears no knowledge of the persons personality. It's as simple as the fact that you were obviously looking at them to notice their hair, purse, clothes. And that makes people feel awkward. I got my fringe cut. And the lady at the cheap store (that I go into often) said "Somethings different about you?" I said "yeah I got a fringe" in return she Said "you should keep it, it really suits you, I only realised it was you when I saw the tattoos" So unless you know, or have seen them a few times, a compliment will be taken usually nicely. But in a drinking environment, you are just hitting in them with that wasted compliment - Posted from rhpmobile

From strangers ,friends, anyone really..and I love to give them ,but sometimes I am a little tentative because people can be a bit suspicious of your motivation...but where I live it's common for strangers to greet each other in the street so people here seem a bit more open ..and OP a lovely thing or you to do each dayxxFreya

I've alway made a point of giving strangers complements, have been doing it for years... It's easy to do, it can make there day a little brighter and it makes people feel better about themselves..... A smile is infectious, so if I can make someone's day or make them smile I'm a happy girl.....💋

That's very goodwilled of you. Elderly folk are also good at receiving them, and often have cool stories in response to it. Maybe change your tact on complimenting women and speak the language they speak nowadays. "If you had a duck face selfie wearing that bangle, I'd 'like' it". I brush off compliments about things I can do nothing about (hands, eyelashes, whatever) and say something like "thanks, I grew them myself" and carry on, but I'm more open to ones that I've done something about (like the shoes I've faffed around for hours buying). - Posted from rhpmobile

I prefer to give to pay it forward and help someone in the street than give vocal compliments to strangers. Do I accept them. Sometimes. Do I smile alot though. Yes all the time and as 28 say's its infectious - Posted from rhpmobile

I love giving complements there's not enough kindness & I've always tried to be a Good Samaritan. However I sometimes find it difficult to accept a compliment myself. I do appreciate it though & makes you feel good all round. 😀 - Posted from rhpmobile

My 9yo son come home a few weeks ago telling me about a homeless man living down at the beach not far from us. Asking my son how he felt about this, he told me it made him sad that this man had no home, but he was happy this man had a lounge, cushions and a few books. So after the lecture about strangers, a 101 questions to my sons and his friends about this man, I decised to pay him a visit, to see if there was anything he needed and to have a chat. He wasn't all that friendly, but he wasn't all that cranky either, by the time I bid him fairwel he had a smile on his face. I again went for a walk this morning, to visit him, but he had since moved on....💋

the women you describe OP, I used to not take compliments very well and would always have to qualify them in some way as if to try and prove I wasn't full of myself. I realised though, that was a very self-defeating reaction and now I am making a conscious effort to just accept a compliment, take it for what it is and say 'thankyou'.

I know what you mean about people being wary of motivations behind a compliment. I find it sad that society has become so cynical. This is one of the reasons why, in my own selfish way, I've made a point of doing this. Not only does it make me focus on the positives that surround me, it will make someone smile and hopefully realize that he/she didn't have to give anything back but a smile.

that a compliment like "Thats a lovely shirt" actually signifies that the person giving the compliment likes the shirt but does not think it looks good on you per se. Where as a compliment "you look fantastic today" is all about the whole person and the outfit and how it all goes together. I know which one I would rather receive.

I used to be wary of strangers giving me compliments, but a girlfriend of mine told me always to accept a compliment and say thank you, so now I do. If I see someone looking good, with a knockout hairstyle, in a fabulous outfit, or gorgeous shoes, etc. I will tell them. I remember years ago when my son was only four, we were on a train and a woman came in with a little boy who had a head of bouncy blond curls. My son went right up to him and said "Hey,.......nice hair!" It was cute

You've described something I practice every day.... although.... Im yet to have a herd of school leavers follow me around to shag me which I can proclaim to the world at every opportunity.... LOL I typically respond to compliments with a kind thank you, and say that it was nice of the other person to notice, AND mention it. Because not everyone takes compliments well... probably due to the way other people have "trained them to respond to compliments which may have been loaded in the past.... I will generally lead in any compliment I give with something along the lines of....."are you the kind of person who can accept a random compliment".... as this prepares that person a little, and their response tells me how to deliver it. Cant resist a nice smile... automatically makes me smile right back. I give compliments but not all the time and not for no reason at all.. In the last few weeks I complimented one lovely spunk on her nice teeth , another on her beautiful smile. Both received the compliment gracelessly... When receiving a compliment , I always return with a smiling thank you...

to a compliment is "thank you" For a very long time i was one that could not take a compliment to save my life and then one day i was watching Oprah (of all things) and she was doing a show on exactly this topic and in fact did this very same thing as a social experiment, any way long story short she had said that when you down play a compliment you actually insult the person paying it to you and that really struck something with me, she challenged viewers to always respond to a compliment with "thank you"even if you didn't agree with them or thought something negative just for 30 days at the time i thought it was weird but somehow found myself doing just that, soon enough it became a habit and now it is the only way i respond and you know what? it really feels good! so ladies get on board, next time you are given a compliment just smile and say thank you! nothing else just thank you it is not that hard and it just might make your day!!

I do appreciate a compliment and take it graciously. I always take it that they mean their compliment, specially with strangers, both men and women who approach me to say nice things about myself (mostly about my clothes and shoes and lips). When I was a young girl, I was considered 'Pugly' - pretty ugly - by the boys in my class. It really hurt me. I was stick skinny, big head, big eyes, big lips (before it got fashionable, i got the suckers poking out) and curly hair. So i did not receive lots of compliments and gave up on bgeing considered one of the pretty gals in class or popular. I focused on my studies (did really well) and sports (mad with karate, basketball, volleyball and running) and ballet. I got lots of accolades and appreciation from my studies and sports and ballet. that was enough for me. I was confident with my abilities and well developed inner beauty. As I grew up, my body developed,. I was getting a lot more compliments and attention from men in particular. by then, I was a pretty well rounded person with fully developed personal interests in lots of things, except sex. My Uni days proved to be interesting and I couldnt believe the attention I was getting, specially I love sports like the guys. I couldn't see what changed then and what the fuss was about, except for bigger boobs. One bf in my last year in Uni (he was 26, and I was 19 going on 20), told me I am beautiful, everyday and made me feel beautiful. he told me to get used to the compliments from men in future and accept it. I took his advice and I give and appreciate compliments freely with good intent. Every woman and man, should be treated like a beautiful exotic orchid plant, it needs to be tendered with love and care. Only then will it blossom and share its exotic flower for all to enjoy.

When I get compliments from strangers I find it easy to say thanks and believe it because I do it too. But I do it only if I genuinely like whatever it is I'm complimenting.

A couple of months ago I had a very elderly man come up to me and say how lovely I looked today and that he had been admiring me. He got a kiss on the cheek for that. I think compliments are awesome as they make you feel so good for the rest of the day. Pusscat xxx
