A significant relationships ends, I tend to do a spring clean. I take everything sentimental or of emotional value and put it away, usually in a box, depending on the size. I pop it as far away as I can in the back of the wardrobe so I don't have to see it. I always tend to run into it some time later, open it up ready to be overwhelmed with memories, but its never happened. I just read the words of cards or look at certain items and think, nope, I've moved on, this relationship ended for a reason So it gets tossed I'm not particularly sentimental when it comes to the end of relationships. What's done is done and I move on I think its healthy to toss, maybe not straight away, but when your ready. But that's just me

Having exited a 20 year relationship last year, i have found i can and prefer an uncluttered life. I know you meant texts, emails etc but I'm saying i include the other bits of life as well in that statement. You dont need that shit. I should have reminded myself of past actions. There was a period of my life late teenage where having exited that period, i housecleaned and removed every last trace of that life. Photos, letters, documents. Everything. Except memories. I have no regrets of that. Live for now. Dont look in the rear view mirror

It can be quite cathartic using scissors to snip them out of old photos too so you enjoy photographic memories without having to see them again.

Cleaning house... a metaphor, or literal? Are we talking emotional clutter or physical clutter? Forgive me if I don't have the right take on the question here... But if we're talking just literal, (semi) physical things... For the things that represent only positive memories, I don't see the need to get rid of, especially if the space is negligable or, in this time and age, digital. When a disaster happens, like a fire, the most treasured losses are things like photos and other life records, things with irreplacable value. I understand the need for some people to rid themselves of certain items at times to "move on", but that generally implies they are moving on from something negative. While some might say that whatever we get rid of, we won't lose our memories... but when we are grey and old, and our memories start to fail on us, anything that brings back memories of a life well lived would be of benefit. But then again, I'm sure other people have much more physical/literal stuff from past "lives/relationships/whatever the OP is implying" than I, in my case it's a few photos and a birthday card! :)

... there is a popular book right now on decluttering : The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying : A simple, effective way to banish clutter forever, by Marie Kondo. I need to be a bit brutal and cull my collection of books! At the moment, it is consuming all available space!

You have the memories, dont need to hold onto anything more than that. I dont even keep jewellry that I was given. I pass it on to my daughter and daughter-in-law. Just doesnt feel right wearing something that was given with love and recieved with love, if thats gone.

Some people make it sound like they have had numerous partners(dislike that word so much)Question is how does one go from one to another all the time. - Posted from rhpmobile
