depression?! ....or just overtired.

March 02 2013

Recently at work we had s sleep specialist come visit, all in all it was a very informative presentation and relative to my job as i work night-shift. However, the most fascinating part of her talk was this; her recent study involved researching 700 people, all of whom HAD to have been diagnosed with depression. The interesting part though, upon further study and evaluation, she found that 70% of these people, actually suffered from some form of sleep apnea ..which she thought might be the case. A conundrum of sorts, i realize some severe cases of sleep apnea can lead to depression, but, it got me thinking...Were some of the 70% misdiagnosed?, and do our wonderful doctors get it wrong from time to time? I read the numbers as sleep deprivation *leads* to depression. I think I've read it, elsewhere, too. And it's a feedback loop. - Posted from rhpmobile

Fantastic Topic OP Being a shiftworker my body, soul and mental stability I look after the most....its about knowing your body, looking out for signs...Look after those three important things and ya set.. Lack of sleep, lack of eating as meals plans are thrown out the window... etc.. Social life in NIL! It can be a lonely isolated place IF the balance is not right. I believe and have seen co-workers fall into deep depression especially for newbies starting out...normally 6mths in..also increase of sleeping tablets/medication BURN OUT I call it...sneeks right up on ya if not careful...its a horrid feeling much like a hang over or like a dirty ol dust cloth!! It`s horrid alright!!! I tend to dis-disagree with doctors and think it can be miss-disiagnised with some people...as I think lack of sleep is the number 1 facor but not the main cause that leeds to depression for some people.. Great sleep does so much wonders for your body and mind! I also believe a shiftworkers bedroom\environment has a lot to do with it...dark curtains, have white noise back groud on law level. etc etc. Change that and that its self will make a huge difference to sleeping odd hrs. Being a shiftworker can put a lot of strain also on relationships especially if the partner has no idea OR ever done shiftwork before...miss out on quality time with partner and children time. Many at work have had marriage breakdowns etc....that was one main cause in mine. That itself can lead one to depression me believes.. There's lots of things that can be taken into consideration before depression can be diagnosed.. I am fortunate enough that I have looked after myself not to go down that path...I empathize those who have and shiftworkers... GO THE MIGhTY SHIFTWORKER :-) FOXY - Posted from rhpmobile

I do think doctors get it wrong at times. Misdiagnosis can have severe consequences if not picked up early. If you have any doubt what so ever, get a second opinion. Trust your gut feelings. I get the occasional apnea bouts and I know it the next day when I cant function as well as I should. I believe that depression can be bought on by lack of sleep .

I believe medics would rather treat the symptom and not the cause!

I agree that i think there is a link between sleep apnoea and what people feel is depression. Lets face it when you're over tired, you become irrational, cranky, uninterested in whats going on around you, mood swings, etcetc all signs of depression too.Sleep deprivation is the root of many evils. My brother has always been very overweight, and struggled to do his job, exercise, and be in a good mood. He had a sleep study done overnight, and the results were amazing, he was diagnosed with extreme apnoea, and now uses oxygen every night. The result now is that after a much better nights sleep he is in a better mood, has more desire to eat well and energy to exercise, so he has now been able to lose weight, which in turn has helped his apnoea! A big circle! Mt ex husband used to travel 2 hrs each way to work in Syd, 6 days a week. After a few years of this his moods changed, he withdrew, and sure enough was diagnosed with depression! We separated partly due to these issues, but now that his hours are better, he has more down time, and he has a job closer to home, he is off his medications, and is much happier. An overall look at a persons lifestyle should certainly be the first steps to helping with depression.

...but there are different levels of depression and in some cases the person doesn't have it but is merely "depressive". Misdiagnosis of depression is quite common.

What happens when ppl become overtired??? We become irritable, cranky, teary, make mistakes, sluggish, n at times depressed! I'm sure this doesn't happen to all ppl though! Some ppl can function on little sleep.... Doctors are human too, they can make mistakes too! Just like anyone in any profession can make mistakes too!
