what you could have been but chose not to.

October 27 2014

Hello everyone. This is my first ever forum post And I have postponed because I wanted to add an original and interesting post. No pressure but here goes. I'm a chef and I have been for a great many years now. However my original career path was completely different. I originally attended university in Scotland to study astrophysics. A complete change in sure you will agree. But during my studies I was working washing dishes at a local restaurant and I eventually started helping to prepare desserts etc. I fell In Love with the entire concept of cooking professionally and eventually chose to disregard my studies to pursue cooking instead. This was by no means necessary. However if I had stuck to my original goal I would probably be loaded by now. I have no regrets and I am happy with my decision unless I think about that Ferrari I could have been driving by now. But I'm curious. How many other people chose to change their goals for better or for worse? And are you satisfied with your decision? Look forward to your responses. Shaun

for a career and even now I cannot think of what I want to do. There are probably a lot of things I could do, be good at and enjoy. I was aspiring to be a prison officer before I had my current job but I got screwed over by my ex trying to get an ADVO out on me (which failed) so can't see me getting through the tests now as you have to disclose all of that sort of stuff.

I've worked in a few very different industries/occupations and have an odd collection of hobbies. I've got a hand full of qualifications, and I had a HECS debt to prove it. I still have no idea what I want to do next, the longest I have stayed at one thing was a voluntary position beyond my day job.

Welcome to the forums Newme071281. Great topic... I think you nailed the 'original and interesting' criteria for sure :) I could have chosen been a bitch; a real negative, hard-done-by, sooky bitch who just wallows in self pity, as a result of the treatment inflicted on me by my son's father. But I chose not to be, and to rise above it. It took work and a conscious effort but it's paid off. I'm happy, I have a successful career, wonderful friends, and a delightful son. Life's good and I'm glad I made that choice. I suspect that there's quite a few other RHPer's who post regularly who have made the same choice :) Much love, Elle xx

I have had lots of different jobs. Went back to high school at 27 to get to university. Worked in pubs most of the time till I finished a degree in Social Science. I wanted to do law. But one of the lecturers was a cleric and a real arse hole to me for some reason. He even told me not to sit the exam as he was going to fail me. I sat it and got a C. I had the other subjects all A and I needed that to get into law. So i had to change my choices. after that tons of work all over the world, doing all kinds of things. till I found myself on my own and no kids at home and though fuck it, I went on student allowance and did my art qualifications. Now I no longer paint, but I do draw that keeps me interested in art. Other than that I am lucky that my partner pays all the bills and I just do as I bloody well like. I am also have other things that keep me occupied and am always learning. I do like money, I like the choices money gives so I am not going to say I would like to be poor but happy.I would not be happy if I was poor, been there done that

I love my role and what I do...earlier this year I got offered a pretty awesome promotion and I didn't even have to apply for it. I have a fantastic boss, can change my roster to suit me (very very flexible), pay is pretty awesome, one the job training is offered. I am also offered all the support I need for this role. I've work really hard to get to where I am today, due to good career choices, work ethics and great bosses who have pushed me to reach my working goals. I am more than grateful for the department I work for now and am really satisfied and happy, so I can't complain. Foxy PS - Welcome newme071281 - great first forum Topic. :)

I grew up in a small Victorian country town, and saw Top Gun at a local cinema. The very next week a RAAF recruiting bus pulled up in the Main Street (this was 1984). I went in and expressed my fervent desire to be the next Maverick, and was told I needed to do Maths 2, physics and so on to even get in the door. Being very much a humanities man, I backed out - although I suspect had I applied myself I could have done those subjects and maybe gone into that field. My fault, no-one else's. I'm still in a pretty good line of work though. I also think I could have been a millionaire secret agent astronaut, although the jury's still out on that one. - Posted from rhpmobile

I fell into the career path that I was in before I had kids, when it came time to go back to work I thought long and hard about what I really wanted to do with my life and decided to make a change. I started my 3 year degree at 35 and as a single parent, working night shift it took me 5 years to finish it, but I'm now doing a job I love and I have and never will regret the decision I made to change my life. It's great you found your passion early newme, but it is never too late to change paths if you're not happy with the one you're travelling.

but I have absolutely no idea what I'd like to do. Instead I fell into a job out of necessity and have stuck at it despite myself to be honest. I'm good at it, but don't enjoy it one iota and envy those who enjoy getting up and going to work every day (like most of the people I work with). On the plus side it's provided nicely for my family and they haven't wanted for anything. Hopefully lil3 can follow her dream of becoming a movie director and all I've gone through will be more than worth it. If I had any idea what I'd like to do I could probably go out and chase it but until then I'll just keep plugging away. Sounds rather morose doesn't it lol. Sorry there's no inspirational ending to the saga....maybe someday.

Great post but alas sometimes you have no control over choice or destiny. I remember I went back to where I used to live in the UK many years ago, caught up with old friends, still doing the things they always did. On conversation when chatting about moving countries, their reply was always the same, that they could have done that. But they didn't. Life is the only chance we have to be the best we can be, our dreams are who we are, go for your dreams no matter how high you have to reach, if you don't make it you will still be a lot higher than those who could have but didn't. In life we have choices, crossroads were we have to choose. All are compromises, but sometimes it takes many roads to reach your destination. Throughout your life you may have several careers, I can count a few in mine but all have moved me to enjoy who I am. Could have? Should have? Both are for regrets...

Started riding round in trucks at 8yrs old and loved it, started part time in a small bakery at 12, learnt to drive trucks at the same time. Was offered a Pastry Cook apprenticeship, but knocked it back because of 2am starts. Started a Diesel Mechanic Apprenticeship at 15yrs old, moved onto the Hire Industry, Mechanic, Sales, Operations, Middle Management etc. 13yrs ago at 38yrs old I turned "Truckie", at nearly 52yrs old, I now shift gears, burn diesel 55-60 hrs a week and love it, if the Transport Industry money improves, I will do it till the day I die. Cheers P.L.

I am working on making it happen right now. I originally started an apprenticeship. But had a rather large motor cycle accident which killed all chance of that. As a result I fell into retail and then worked into hr but never really enjoyed. A year ago I stepped out of my career and started my own business. It's not yet there but it does have a clear path back into the a trade. It's major hard work but beats the hell out of an office job! Money is certainly important but life is all about that precarious balance between having money and having a life.

A career isn't everything its cracked up to be, you are not always in control of your destiny, choosing to have a wonderful life with children and a great partner is so much more rewarding too. We cannot have it all, a brilliant career, an outstanding partner and a beautiful family without compromise along the way. People say we should always search for a life balance, I really believe such a balance is so fleeting that it's gone before you realize you had it. Life is what YOU make it, well done... :-)
