Its still an unfolding story, with a few twists left yet. Once the Americans eventually get their handson him it could get interesting.I have to be honest and say the Assange saga isn't one I have followed closely.I'm usually more consumed with domestic politics and policy.Cheers Felonious

is my opinion. He's got bigger balls then me putting his head on the chopping block. I think it's in everyones interest to know what's behind the war on terror, 9/11 and other horrific shit that's been happening in the world instead of getting all their info off commercial media which is owned by the likes of Rupert Murdoch. Murdoch's in bed with the Bush's, the Rockafella and other mega rich families that play us all like fools and call all of us expendable collateral. The US say the information he released put soldiers at risk but they don't give a rats about their people or ours. They have to keep wars going because that's what their money's invested in, weapons....these pricks are selling them to both sides. Oil ain't going to be around forever. There's heaps of info out there about the these families (ILLUMINATI) and the unbelievably low and sickening things they do to their own fellow citizens let alone the enemy. Thay have a history of starting conflicts all around the world causing political upheaval by using their own little army the CIA. Does it affect us...shit yes! Remember Vietnam.. we're still trying to get out of Iraq. They shot their own President JFK for christ's sake!?! I think they'll get Julian, execute him in the US or chuck him in Guantanamo Bay holiday camp to deter other people not to do the same. If they kill him, then maybe he'll be matyred or else let him rot in the Bay, and people may forget about him. The truth in the hands of the masses is dangerous and that's what these turds are scared of.....People Power!!! sorry, that's my two cents...I'll shut up now and go back in the corner

The man has balls of steel. He stole nothing. Distributed stuff in the safest way he could manage. For no real gain to himself. The thief was actually Bradly Manning who will most likely rot in prison. He saw his Govt doing terrible things and took a stand. Weather his actions were right or wrong is open to debate. If you saw your country doing unspeakable things to repressed people would you speak out or walk away quietly? That's the question we should be asking our selves in this thread.

so you mean the US serviceman who deliberately leaked the information to wikileaks so that it could be published should be dealt with harshly? he used wikileaks as the publishing mechanism to avoid repercussions as a whistleblowerWas any information actually leaked that was of endangering lives? my understanding is that wikileaks does verify data, and does redact information to protect people where necessary - the "endangering lives" stuff was hyperbole from an embarassed govt if I recall correctly.

As we believe sex and politics should stay firmly separated and a query like this clearly exposes the freethinkers from the followers. (Please note that's not directed at anyone whose already commented). Information is power and some information deserves to be in the hands of the people, some peoples/governments/corporations true motivations need to be exposed. Whether he'll be remembered as a hero I can't say (he's already a hero to many) but definitely he'll be remembered as a champion of free speech.

What a foolish notion. For that to work, all nations would have to do it, not just Australia and America. There always needs to be some confidentiality. While insisting on no secrets within government, he conducts his own affairs in the utmost secrecy and holds his staff to the strictest clandestinity. That's hypocrissy. He places lives in danger and holds himself as being above the law. That's arrogance. This man is no hero. He's most probably a rapist.

we're very blessed in Oz. Most of us wake up at home in our own bed and drive to work without worrying about road side bombs and ambushes, unlike our brave servicemen and women. Assange's information should have been a red flag for us to get our people out of there and home where they belong. I don't trust what our govt tells us, why the hell would I believe whatever the US govt say. back to my corner now

the guys won a WalkleyAward, and was put up for a Nobel Peace Prize, he's also received an Amnesty International award for media, a Time Magazine person of the year (peoples choice) and the Sydney Peace award (with nelson mandela and the dalai lama..pretty good company). then theres the Martha Gellhorn prize for Journalism........I'd be hoping people remembered me if I won just one of these... this guy opens peoples eys, and exposes the lies that Governments like the USA's tell, to hide the mistakes and crimes they commit in the so called name of 'peace'. the truth doesnt endanger anyones life, if anything it has the potential to save many more lives than we realise.... the guys a hero. he doesnt steal from, or extort, or alter things to change truths...he just exposes the lies we are told, and the misinformation we are all fed.

Whether he is good or bad,he knowingly broke the law. That's the Moral Dilemma- When/ Is it ok to break the law.We have laws to ensure the fabric of society, who has the right to say who can break them. What law is ok to break & which aren't. Another interesting point is that he has chosen to take refuge in the Embassy of a country which doen't have full freedom of the press. So somebody that champions freedom of the press being protected by a country that doen't have freedom of the press.Huge double standards me thinks

is a bit of a narcissist if you ask me. I liked that he brought out about the so called friendly fire acts by the US forces, especially the clip on the helo firing on civilians/children. His publishing of the "Pentagon Papers" detailing US acts of bastardry in Iraq and Afganistan and so called "friendly" countries like Ausralia is interesting. He didn't post details on personnel but on acts done by US forces including firing on weddings/civilians, assasination and, acts of industrial espionage. However his stance on answering the swedish charges is self centred to say the least. He allegedly slept with 2 different women and was NOT using protection, when the women found out they brought charges of sexual assault. This is the grounds for the extradition under EU law. I doubt that the swedes are really in the pocket of the septics and he is just too involved in himself to apologise to the women over the incident. His claim the swedes will turn him over to the septics is a ploy to bring attention to what he believes is his "plight" in regards to US calls for him to be brought to "justice" and the american way. He believes he is more important than the rule of law and he need not take responsibility for his actions in the community. His circus in the Ecuadorean embassy is not much more than self aggrandising show boating and it does his reputation as a fighter for the rights of others no favours. Especially when Ecuador is no shining light for human rights. Mike

What's wrong with a whistleblower (i.e. a person exposing systemic corruption) trying to avoid repercussions for being such given that reprisals against whistleblowers are supposed to be unlawful anyway? Don't you think corruption should be exposed? Attention should be focused on the problems, not the person reporting them.

-

I hope he's remembered for his deeds and not his supposed crimes. But I guess it all comes down to a matter of perspective, and how is that shaped these days? For some reason I always think of the brilliant movie V for Vendetta, and how it raised the question of how someone can be seen as either a revolutionary or a terrorist. I don't think a label of 'hero' necessarily fits Assange, not when someone uses extreme measures to carry out important work. He's made his mark upon the world, without a doubt. I don't see him as getting away from the hell that the U.S. and the U.K. has unleashed upon him without some considerable tarnish to his name, but in fifty or so odd years he'll still be remembered.

watched wikileaks secrets and lies.. and a couple of other docos on wiki leaks. julian assange only played a part in the release . Bradly manning released the information to a well known hacker Adrian lamo, who had connections with wikileaks at the time. From there the thousands of reports and documents with names and places edited were released via the new york times and the gaurdian. wikileaks held back on some 15000 war logs for the reason he didnt want to endanger lives. Noone mentioned in the leaks had there lives endagered.. but some corrupt governments like in tunisia were effected and even over thrown.. alot of good came from these documents . If you look at some of the reports alot of the uprisings in the middle east can be attributed to the release of these cables . The war logs had information and evidence of american hit squads that were illegally killing innocent civillians ..even video footage of some of there nasty work. seems to me wikileaks revealed what most already knew, that the usa has a history of corruption along with many other countries involved. Its important to mention also, bradly manning has being tortured and left in a millitary cell with no clothes , semi blind , no contact , his not allowed to exercise if he tries they tie him to the bed .. reports have suggested his lost his mind already. Its really not like what you see in hollywood movies.

interesting that Julian has picked the Ecuadorian embassy tho? He claims to be about openness and human right s when the Ecuadorean gumbyment is openly attacking their local free press? I am of the opinion that he is far too interested in, that what is good for Julian is good for everyone. Its been interesting to watch tho. The way that western governments have condemned the way that these "truths" as revealed via wikileaks has shown them to be happy to conceal acts taken in "our" name that we wouldn't always DO ourselves. I am not saying that we should continue with the world as it is, just we really need to decide what we want to happen in our name. Mike

There is no action without consequences, he took the chance but not prepared for the consequences, ultimately he has put lives at risk all for his own attention seeking, it is not about uncovering the truth but to get headlines but it bounced right back in his face now he is whimping and wining about it, a true hero would be prepared to take the consequences and suck it up. No, he is not a hero, he has not thought about others other than himself and too arrogant to realise he has put people at risk, or too arrogant, ignorant to realise or admit it. Surely if the shoe was on the other foot then maybe he would have thought twice, if he had been on the receiving end of his foolish behaviour and those that think is is a hero, what if you were on the receiving end of his thoughtless actions and there was an element of danger in his actions to not just you or your family, would you then think he was a hero standing up for his rights? What about the rights of the victims of his foolish actions? Always stand in the shoes of another and unless you are prepared to cop it on the chin, take the consequences then and only then could you ever consider being a passionate believer of right and wrong.

I don't remember what the consequences were for the child in The Emperor Wears No Clothes but the Assange saga should illustrate that there are consequences for being that child. I can't imagine how history will view him but it will depend on who writes it. There's already quite a few different points of view expressed here. For an activist, he's right up there - at least for those that make themselves known. For a computer nerd, he handles the media well but for a self-promoter he's awkward and made quite a few mistakes. jsk6767 I'm sure you'll keep thinking that right up until your precious state turns on you. jensman1903 ' ... He's most probably a rapist.' I'm most probably a leprechaun.

It lets me know who here I'm likely to get along with.Assange does his work out of self interest and for self promotion. Which doesn't mean he's not doing some good, just leaves him well short of hero status.Bradley Manning on the other hand risked his life to expose some horrific abuses of power by his government and employer, and without any expectation of reward or recognition. That's a little more heroic. Both will be remembered where it counts.Mr C

all for contributing to this thread,so many well informed people here. The fact is that he has never been charged with rape,Women Against Rape in Sweden have said how appalled they are that this case has been used by the Swedish press and breached the privacy of Assange and his accusers. He offered to go to Sweden to be interviewed, if he could be guaranteed that he would not be extradited to the USA. If sex without a condom was a punshable offence in this ,I doubt that the courts would cope. Bradley Manning the man who was the whisleblower is in jail.If Assange is extradited to the USA he most certainly would suffer a similar fate. Assange is in fact a multi award winning journalist,is he an arrogant narcissistic attention seeker, maybe ...but I can think of easier ways for a man with his skills to grab attention.

Whether you like him or hate him, the government is trying to get him on a technicality, in a country that has no problem with sex it does seem odd they are trying to get him on this matter, to me it isn't actually rape as the women were consenting, it could be that they are trying to pay off the women and cry wolf, which is pretty shallow ithing to do but that is politics for you, to get him on this trivial matter is pretty sad as obviously they have nothing else to get him on. so he can be extradicted, a trumped up charge is pretty lame in my books.

I am assured the Austtralian government has put people in danger by sending them to Iraq and Afganistan. Assanges' so called crime has been to expose the way we are treated as mushrooms. The young man Manning who was in the American army has been charged with revealing US secret documents. The wrongs done in our name hasbeen an illuminating experience. I am not so sure he has commited treason in Australia as most of the documents related to the US state dept and military and mostly relate to actions of an extremely dubious nature. One of the most damning things was the exposure of the Helicopter attack on a group of civilians and a jornalist in Iraq. The US govt calls itself an open and free leader of the western world and is supposed to be a force for freedom and openness however since the 1950s it has been meddling in other govts and installed dicatators who will make it easier to conduct business for American companies. This seems to me to be self interest of the highest order and demonstrates a lack of moral fibre in the so called leader of the "free" world. I don't see the US dooing much about the Saudi problem and the Wahabist extremist elements coming out of Saudi and causing huge problems such as the Bali Bombing and the twin towers. Why did the US invade Iraq when the terrorists who destroyed the World trade centre originated in Saudi Arabia? Mike

is not a hero he is a hacker who has exposed some of the dirty acts done by the US and some of its allies. Some of these things are abhorrent in the brutality of the acts against civilians and I for one would like this shit to stop. I see many people wish to bury their heads in the sand and ignore that the US has killed more civilians in their war on terror, families at weddings have been targeted by hellfire missiles. I doubt you would be ecstatic if the happiest day of your daughter or sons' life was interrupted by a misslie exploding n the middle of the reception! More civilians died in Iraq than ever died in the 911 attacks and the Bali bombing. Yet this dirty war on terror is not over and afganistan looks like it will still be a shithole long after our troops are home. I am lead to understand that over 50,000 civilians lost their lives in Iraq and THAT war was fought for OIL not as stated by Bush as part of the war on terror or to deprive the Iraqi goverment the "bomb" which they did not have and australian troops died there for NO GOOD REASON. So who is resposible for aussie troops dying in Iraq? The Australian govt is! Mike

Let’s focus on what we know. Let’s think critically about this. Let’s leave the conspiracy theories at the door. Speculation does not a case make. Here is a man, who for better or worse, believes in something. Here is a man, who for better or worse, stands for something greater than himself. Here is a man who technically, in his early years, broke no laws and to the best of my knowledge, still technically hasn’t. The sex charges, god forbid… are nothing more than allegations. Allegations do not a case make. At best, it buys him time. How can we as a country, as a people and as a nation…. Condemn this modern day outlaw, and yet… be proud of the Ned Kelly’s, the Chopper Read’s, and so on? What crime has Mr. Assange, committed? Where is the proof he has done anything wrong? Of course, Uncle Sam wants him… because what he has done is simply and purely evil, and it’s of great upset to the axis powers and the new age of the Iron Eagle. Martin Borman would be quite proud. So would Allen Dulles and all the other MK-ULTRA, Bluebird and MK-DELTA scum out there? The first amendment of the American constitution states freedom of speech. This runs counter-intuitively and counterproductively to the interests of national security. If this is to be held as true, then America has become the new Nazi State. Except this time, Hitler has become a half-black Arab who may as well be the antichrist. The freedom of information, what a lie, what a misappropriation of justice this is… is Julian Assange to be labelled an enemy combatant, a threat to national and global security… without trial, charge or even evidence? If that’s the case you insist on making… then you are uneducated and ignorannt scum and you should be taken behind the chemical sheds and relieved of your mortality. You can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs. That’s the way it’s always been. The 95% sacrificing their lives for the 5% that dare to achieve great things, whether for good or evil… it matters not. He is a noble man, overeducated perhaps, he is a freethinking liberal, definitely arrogant and there’s no doubt he has a gift to share with the world. If you think he’s bad… you’re an idiot. If you think he is an information terrorist, then relax… it’s only going to get worse. Bottom line? Don’t fuck with the Iron Eagle. America is dying, never to recover. And while we’re distracted with this Assange debacle, Muslims are going mental and god knows what else. Julian Assange for better or worse is a beautiful distraction. He will be martyred like Jesus, like Kennedy, like Diana… or in political terms, Nixon’s Watergate, Bill & Monica’s trouser friendly kiss which was ultimately a distraction for the Kenyan Bombings, and 9/11 which was Bush’s distraction to reassert the power of the decentralized Rockefeller/Rothschild wall-street funded Whitehouse. The Reichstag fire comes to mind. Does anyone else see a problem here? Julian Assange is one man. You can murder him. You can take him off the air. Granted. You can imprison him. You can deny him basic 1st amendment rights. Unconstitutional, granted. However, you cannot kill an idea. Clearly, the media love him like they love David Icke. Privately owned news-media empires control almost every aspect of our lives… for ridiculous trillions of dollars per annum combined, ansd yet this one man and his wiki leaks, exposes questionable government dealings, “sensitive” and “classified” information that people have a right to know, and that’s not unethical? Okay, fine. Take me out back to the chemical sheds and put a bullet behind my right ear. I haven’t done anything wrong, although apparently all one needs nowadays to prove wrongdoing is an allegation, and a series of government officials to validate an “official report”, be it the 9/11 commission or the laughable Starr Report of the Clinton era. Of course Clinton was a goddamn hippie, of course Hillary was a dyke. I don’t suppose any of you, Celebree aside; have any of you noticed that since 9/11… there has been no real news. We have editorials and opinions… panel shows like The Project and Can of Worms, which only serve to get people to discuss issues with no view to a solution. I would offer several solutions, and I would point out several courses of action, although those among you who need to be led, being the majority would condemn me… simply for offering a solution to the problem? No. Fuck you very much. I don’t think you’re ready for it, and on a more elitist note, I don’t think the majority of you are capable of independent thought, and much less willing to act. Those of you, who are with me, stay where you are. Those who are against me, move to the right. You will be seen to shortly for re-education and grouped accordingly for further re-education or extermination. To quote George Bush Jr. “You are either with us, or you are with the terrorists. We will make no distinction between these acts, and those who committed them.” Will you live on your knees, or die on your feet?

i'd rather die on my feet, but with eyes wide open. i'd rather hear truth, than manipulative misinformation......... i read much of whats on wikileaks...and for the main part, its as boring as batshit. obviously tho, there are many who feel lotherwise. i couldnt find any information about Australia that could be putting peoples lives at risk, rather it was stories about the internet 'filter', the blacklisting of websites, and various stoires about the likes of the NSW Ambulance authority and transcendental meditation etc...lol.. on the main page are links to stories that begin with the following...all 'riveting reading'.....not. Thursday 5 July 2012, WikiLeaks began publishing the Syria Files – more than two million emails from Syrian political figures, ministries and associated companies, dating from August 2006 to March 2012 On Monday February 27th, 2012, WikiLeaks began publishing The Global Intelligence Files, over five million e-mails from the Texas headquartered "global intelligence" company Stratfor. The e-mails date between July 2004 and late December 2011 Today (12.01.12) WikiLeaks began releasing a database of hundreds of documents from as many as 160 intelligence contractors in the mass surveillance industry. Working with Bugged Planet and Privacy International, as well as media organizations form six countries – ARD in Germany, The Bureau of Investigative Journalism in the UK, The Hindu in India, L’Espresso in Italy, OWNI in France and the Washington Post in the U.S. Wikileaks is shining a light on this secret industry that has boomed since September 11, 2001 2011-04-25 In thousands of pages of documents dating from 2002 to early 2009 and never seen before by members of the public or the media, the cases of the majority of the prisoners held at Guantanamo — 758 out of 779 in total — are described in detail in memoranda from JTF-GTMO, the Joint Task Force at Guantanamo Bay, to US Southern Coand in Miami, Florida. a lot of the information thats there is really more historical than current...and shows paper trails that lead to current or recent events...like the Syrian Crisis for example... not sure how that impacts on the safety of Australians.... but some here seem to think it does..

I tried to be a fan because I do agree, to a point with many of his statements but the man is simply not a hero, he's an egotist. Heroes protect and save lives, not endanger them. "Despite withholding some 15,000 incident reports for "safety reasons," thousands of documents in the Wikileaks Afghan war log do identify Afghans by name, family, location, and ideology. The Taliban issued a warning to Afghans, alleged in the log to have worked as informers for the NATO led coalition, that "US spies" will be hunted down and punished, indicating they will investigate the named individuals before deciding on their fate. Asked what he thought of the dangers to those families created by the release of their personal information, Assange claimed that many informers in Afghanistan were "acting in a criminal way" by sharing false information with NATO authorities. He insisted that any risk to informants’ lives was outweighed by the overall importance of publishing the information." (source Wikipedia) I'm not "proud" of Ned Kelly or Chopper Reed either but it's interesting that these are the kinds of people you have chosen to compare him with. Mike, so what if he has come out saying that he wishes to go to Sweden to face the charges awaiting him there? This is exactly what UK authorities have been insisting on and negotiating with the Ecuadorian Consulate for. Now he's coming out claiming it's what he wants. He's just putting his spin on it. The man is shameless. You're free to admire the man all you want but stop insisting that the rest of us have to because it's not going to happen.

Hero - someone who puts them selves in danger for his belief that he's helping others (tick)Egotist - someone who spends too much time in front of the mirror talking to him self (tick)And I actually think what he's doing is saving lives. The lives being saved are just not too obvious at this point, but light may fall on that down the track. For instance, at last count The Lancet (British medical journal) put the death toll in Iraq at over 500 000. Largely children, largely because of USA foreign policy and sanctions. Someone has to hold govenments like that to account.? And it sure ain’t going to be the media and corporations that pay to have the governments elected.

Quoting 'mikeandshel if hes not a hero... i think hes most definitely going to go down in history as one of the most influential personalities of our time....regardless of where the charges laid aginst him lead....... i hate quoting myself, but this is what i said earlier....and i didnt realise it could be construed as me trying to convince others...i was sharing my 'thoughts' and had left it here, days ago. what i've contributed since this, was fact, and what i'd found on wikileaks own site....... and i had seen what was on wikpedia, but chose to not go there, as it was only part of the story.... bradley manning is alleged to have released the information and documents (possibly with accomplices) i'd be looking at them, if anyone, as a source of potential harm to others.... and not 'shoot the messenger'....or maybe the US itself should foot the blame...for being somewhere they arent wanted, and for soliciting the assistance of people who otherwise wouldve remained as 'innocents' I took this from the same wikipedia page.. .The Prime Minister of Australia, Julia Gillard, has come under widespread condemnation and a backlash within her own party for failing to support Assange after calling the leaks "an illegal act" and suggesting that his Australian passport should be cancelled. Hundreds of lawyers, academics and journalists came forward in his support with the Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, unable to explain how Assange had broken Australian law. Opposition Legal Affairs spokesman, Senator George Brandis, a Queen's Counsel, accused Gillard of being "clumsy" with her language, stating, "As far as I can see, he (Assange) hasn't broken any Australian law, nor does it appear he has broken any American laws. The former Foreign Minister, Kevin Rudd, said that "decisions concerning the withdrawal or otherwise of passports rests exclusively with himself as foreign minister based on the advice of the relevant agencies", and that Mrs Gillard's comments about illegality referred to the US, on whom he placed blame for the affair. I'm with Kev on this one....and blame the US for putting our troops in harms way, and for endangering the lives of local and innocents....

There's a fine line between Truth, Justice & the Global Way...He had/has an ideology, he is smart, talented and charismatic...or is he...?if he is...why didn't he develop a plan to unveil the truth without risking the national security of a number of countries...?the reality is that we do not lead perfect lives...nor do we live in a perfect world...part of our governments job is to keep us secure and protected and love it or leave it some information is too sensitive to be revealed to the masses for that reason..Although I do not believe in wars as a solution to problems...I empathize with the soldiers who are trying to protect us and our children in this looney hi-tech world...they also need to be protected..If we all believe in and want to live in an honest world we should not judge his mistakes but maybe learn from his inspiration ideology and stand up and be counted...One persons ideology can only evolve if it is supported by an active practical not theoretical majority...

Jman I said I wanted him to go to sweden and APOLOGISE to the women concerned as I aknowlege it was a consensual sexual encounter and the thing he did wrong was not wear a condom. I find him to be driven by ego much the same way you do. I am apalled that the US is calling for the death penalty for someone who's only "crime" was to tell the truth. I agree he should pay attention to the British legal finding that he should be extradited to sweden and answer the charges. How ever the facts uncovered regarding US implication in civilian deaths in Iraq and Afgahistan does show that the US is not the good citizen it portays itself as. For this I consider him useful in shining a light onto places and deeds that need to be seen. Mike

I'll have to apologise to you too, Mike. Errr, the Mike I was directing my comments to not the Mike who thought I was commenting to. That's not confusing, is it? The last sentence of my last post was not supposed to be directed at you, it was meant to be a general statement to all Assange supporters who are pushing their case so strenuously. Upon rereading my post I can see that I did not make that clear. I will also apologise for saying that he is most probably a rapist. I was just being flippant which, many of you know, is my habit. Speking of being flippant, we come to my last post and my comment about Ned Kelly and Chopper Reed.Sparetime01, that is the most insulting thing anyone has ever said to me. Holy shit! Suggesting I might want to be a politition. I'm mortified. Haven't you read the rules about not vilifying other members. That's harsh and offensive language right there. Do you kiss your mother with that mouth? Funny you should jump on that tid bit and ignore some of the offensive nonsense that Celebree wrote. (Please not that I am not in support of some of jsk6767's comments either). "Hitler has become a half-black Arab who might as well be the antichrist", "uneducated and ignorant scum", "relieved of your mortality", "idiot", "Muslims are going mental and god knows what". Your going to accept these racist lunatic rantings simply because she is a strenuous supporter of your "hero". "Julian Assange for better or worse is a beautiful distraction. He will be martyred like Jesus, like Kennedy, like Diana..." This is the sort of claptrap you'll support. Celebree should be ashamed of the sentiments she expressed and you should be ashamed to support her. It wasn't me who came up with the "Ned Kelly/Chopper Reed" comparison, that's all to Celebree's credit. Let me say that I've had some very close Muslim friends. The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful and nothing like the extremists you see in the news. To compare all Muslims to those militants is like saying every Australian is like the thugs from the Australia Day riots of 2005 in Cronulla. On that day, a young man, surrounded by his mates on a train, walked up to a ten year old girl and punched her in the face for looking middle eastern but our focus is on a foolish Islamic mother who took a photo of her son holding up a placard that she couldn't read. A foolish act but not as horrendous as those perpetrated by our own people. Support Assange all you want but take care with the kind of people you're allying yourself with. Hugs and kisses, Jensman.

...I know you think you're making a good point in Assange's defence but you're actually going off in an irrelevant tangent. The OP was not offering us a choice of two options, those being advocacy for the U.S. Government or for Assange. Thank you all the same but no thanks. I'll not stand up in support for either. Do I think that the U.S. Government is rife with corruption? Yes, I do. In fact, I believe every government in the world is. Do I think Assange is the hero who is going to save us all from them? No, I don't. With more resources at his disposal, Assange has achieved less against the U.S. Government than Woodward and Bernstein and while they managed to topple a President, they did not change the system. Do you think this corruption exists in four year cycles? No, it is firmly entrenched within the system and our elected officials actually play a relatively small part in the machinations. It was nameless 'public servants' working within the security departments that manufactured the evidence of weapons of mass destruction that led to war. You tell me who can change human nature. There have been men of power, with their own adjendas, manipulating events in government since before recorded history. Nothing, that I can see, will change this. Certainly not Assange. I believe he is just another player. No man, with his intelligence can possibly believe that pure, benevolent leadership can ever be attained.

It is almost laughable that few people have principled objections when Mainstream Media releases documents they've received from whatever legal or illegal source or means, with little to no information on the person sending the message, yet they are only to happy to crucify a WhistleBlower they already know everything about IF THEY WANT TOThere are Many Easily available reseachable and verifiable facts about this subject if you can sift through all the Mainstream Media Word Magic and tricks to twist public perceptions...One i think that is most Important to note is that the american government had to make a statement due to pressure from Assange's Amnesty and other concerned civil liberty advocacy groups, lawyers etc to provide clear and definable proof that his actions" Put Lives at Risk" what was not published/promoted by mainstream media was the statement to congress that the accusation was unfounded. Julian Assange was detained under housearrest for 1 year without charge, before seeking asylum in various embassies. Not at any point in time have Australian consular authorities visited Julian Assange .Australia actually refuses to make representations on Mr. Assange’s behalf in any manner whatsoever. In relation to the " Allegations if you reseacrch the very complex sex crimes laws in sweden, you will be as amazed as i was to find that even though you have consensual Protected sex with a woman, that she can a week later feel very different about the encounter and the charges filed come under the rape section of the very complex criminal code. You can read the transcript of the only ever taped police interview of Julian Assange online which was taken one week after the said allegation was made, whilst he was still in sweden. He did not flee anything as far as the questioning went he was free to leave the country.Mr. Assange has not been charged with an offense in any country, though it's not though lack of effort.Julian would probably get a laugh out of what i am about to type next. But don't make an ASS of your self by making ASSumptions. I think the most inportant message that i personally have taken from this..... and the opinions in this thread is that;None of Us are Free...if even One of Us are Chained...That's Just Kinky

I seem to recall that he has exposed extremely disturbing practises used by our main "Allie" when in combat. I grew up in a service family and have been a supporter of our Arned forces and had family serve in armed conflict and return damaged from there. I grew up during the Vietnam war and I recall the oipinion of people who returned from that as being not all that favorable of the american soldiers mostly due to the fact that they blazed away indiscrimminately when in a firefight. Those people from that war are now in charge except for George Bush who was in charge and got out of it due to influence in washington. OOPS he was a president.... OOPS both of them.... I am extremely disturbed that we allie our country to a country that holds itself out as a beacon of freedom and human rights who then proceed to fire on innocent civilians and calls it COLLATERAL damage. A country that routinely acts to intervene in in the politics of foriegn countries even friendly ones like Australia. That we got involved in Iraq due to the treaty we have with the US was one of the worst things that we could have done. Afganistan could have been done better but Bush was so intent on a war in Iraq that there is now no chance of us coming out of there feeling we have sacrificed the lives of our soldiers for fuck all. Now the US has a HUGE war debt that is putting the rest of the world into a recession. GOOD WORK GUYS Assange is just pointing to shit and we should aknowlege that shit is happening. Mike

I do find this subject interesting but I've never seen a dramatised bioflick yet that's accurate. They are primarily for entertainment value, not for sharing information and they are invariably biased depending on the views of the film maker. I expect that there is more to be learnt on the subject from some of the more informed posts on this thread. There's certainly been some lively exchange of information here and I've gleamed a lot from it. I still think Assange is a prancing, preening puntz and I'll never view him as a hero but I guess he's not the villian either. I think it's a good thing that adults can exchange thoughts here. It's what has attracted me to this "sex site". I must say though, that your post of the 24th took me by surprise. I've seen you on the forums before but you've never caught my attention before for being so provocative. I actually tried to look at your profile, to have a peek at your activity and see if any of your other posts were anything like that but you've got me blocked. Fair enough, I guess, if you didn't like my response to your post but then I got an odd private message from jsk6767. He was contacting me to apologise for his behaviour on this thread. I'm not sure how many others he sought to apologise to but he said that he couldn't post a public apology as RHP has barred him from the forums. He did go a bit too far with his comments but I'm surprised any of his rantings were taken that seriously. I'm sure you didn't feel that your life was seriously threatened. I really hope you're not playing games here. That would be disappointing.

I love this shit! This is giving me a semi. Next up: Red Hot Pie tackles the West Bank settlements. I can't wait to hear Geoff and Bessie's thoughts on Israel/Palestine conflict.Sex and politics; love and war. 'SIF they don't go together (and with the chaos that ensues!) Seriously though, I don't think I could sleep with someone I couldn't find an agreement with politically. And so like any self-respecting nonce, I hereby declare myself: uncommitted (but most definitely should be committed for the statement above.) I don't think Julian Assange is a hero or a villain. I can see how he has elements of both, but also flies in the face of both. He's an interesting character, that's for sure. And that's what this is: an amazing, surreal story that is so whacky it could barely have been written. Seriously, this Aussie dude that looks like a Bond villain, Swedish sex scandals, wanted by the US Government, living in a South American Embassy which was potentially going to be violated by the UK... it's insane! I genuinely feel unqualified to pass judgement on Assange without being familiar with a) Swedish rape laws, b) the circumstances of his accusations, c) reading the 15,000 odd released cables, d) examining the fallout from it. I think there are lots of different issues that people tend to lump in together. Is being a sex criminal the same as aiding terrorists? Did he do either? According to whose standards? It's murky as hell. What I'm more interested in is the reaction of the major governments involved. I am utterly ashamed at Australia - first at Gillard's craven comments, second at McClelland and now Roxon's wormy positioning. It's the great unsaid that everybody knows but nobody will formally admit that the US government has an enormous file and prosecutions ready to throw at Assange as soon as they get the chance. The US of course can't and won't admit it, which is interesting to me. They have been completely and utterly embarrassed by the incident. Do I approve of the leaks? I don't think so, in principle. States need to be able to keep some secrets and to operate internationally with some degree of confidentiality. Having it all exposed hurts diplomacy. At the same time, has good come from the leaks? Absolutely, I think so. Lots of dodgy dealings have been exposed, particularly concerning the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. On balance I'd say more good has come from the leaks than bad, for which there are many accusations but very little evidence. I still don't approve of it on principle, but I'm not going to condemn it. It's very grey. And I don't think I would in any way support the US extraditing Assange and holding him indefinitely on trumped up extra-judicial charges, ie. military hearings. I am concerned for Bradley Manning's health, physically and mentally, and hope he comes out of this alright. And that's what I think (I think. I'm open to suggestion.)Phew. I need a cigarette. Well, I need to take up smoking, and then have a cigarette.
