The use of Ozzie slang Migh be tough to understand. You might get called a yank or sepo (septic tank) it's just slang for American .Beer is the international language so as long as you have a cold beer you will be fine.Vegimite on your toast is a must but go extremely lean on the amount big tip a skim/whips as its strong don't go thick like peanut butter. Most Americans are extremely loud so tone it down and you will find u2 will fit in and enjoy

there’s quite. a bit of what we say has the opposite meaning eg saying something is mickey mouse. here’s us saying it’s good. or better. and in the states saying something is mickey mouse. was quite derogatory to my freinds , lmao. best way to look at the dialogue differences is it’s not what you say it’s how it’s said and the delivery mr b - Posted from rhpmobile

Some answers: We will be in Melbourne, Cairns, and Sydney over a two week period in mid-July. I was warned about fanjy pack vs bum bag, although I will not be wearing one at any point while there. I'm looking forward to the animals. We are visiting an animal sanctuary in Yarra Valley and we will go to a zoo at some point, too, I'm sure. Regarding the use of the word cunts, I don't think it's something that is used every day or all that often. But here, using it is one of the quickest and easiest ways to start a fight (when it is directed at a woman), so it is very rare to hear the word used at all. I can't think of the last time I heard it, honestly. And I'm disappointed about not getting shot. I was hoping for a little taste of home while there, at least. - Posted from rhpmobile

If you get time in Sydney and are feeling adventurous, climb the bridge, there's a good zoo there too. Melbourne.. meh.. They do have a glass room in a building in the city that goes outwards and it has a glass floor, 80something floors high? Cairns, very laid back, great barrier reef, kuranda rail and skyrail are must do excursions. As for the C word.. I am a truck driver, I do use it at the truck, but not in normal use :D

I think it is fantastic you guys are able to travel and can maybe connect with like minded people as you explore another country. Yay for you :)You'll have an amazing time. Melbourne and Cairns are incredible places with fun, friendly people. I found Sydney to be a bit too "businessy" with quite rude and pushy people, but that was before I discovered RHP and I am from Perth, which is pretty easy going. There are events posted so look out for ones on while you are here in Oz. Not all of us Aussies use the C word all the time. But we are a pretty welcoming bunch (I won't get political)As for surprises, I am not sure, tipping isn't as big as it is over there, lol, % gratuity and then tipping on top is not a thing here. But certainly reward your server if they do an amazing job :) Have an wonderful trip, hope you have a lot of fun and make fantastic memories :)

If you like to walk make sure while you are in Sydney to do the Bondi to Coogee walk. Gorgeous. Nice cafes along the way and also some great places to eat and people watch at either Coogee or Bondi end.

If you come over to Perth we have a holiday island where Quokkas live. These are carnivorous creatures which despite their cute appearance have been known to attack and kill humans. If you search under quokka pic, you will see a picture of them in full attack mode, arms outstretched, leaping towards its prey with a maniacal grin on their face. We try and hide this menace by talking about all the shark attacks, whereas the reality is we have lost more people through quokka attacks than great white sharks. Main suggestion I can make is wear a scarf to protect your neck and jugular.

And if you're going to Cairns( my hometown ), be sure to drop in to Hartleys Creek Crocodile Farm. It's a croc zoo, actually. It's only an easy 1 hours drive north, before Port Douglas...and you'll see BIG reptiles up close. The southern zoo's are too cold for them. Probably best not to swim in the ocean off Cairns. But, the Reef is safe. That's 70 kilometres out. Only sharks out there.

If the spiders don't get you, the scorpions, sharks, crocs, or quokkas will. If things go on your feet, do you not wear socks under your shoes? Which toe does the strap go between before you put your shoe on? Thanks for the recommendation for the walk by Coogee beach. I will certainly make that happen while there. People watching is one of my favorite hobbies. I'm also looking forward to finally seeing a proper knife. - Posted from rhpmobile

Hartley's, kuranda and skyrail, GBR, Josephine Falls and Boulders are all must see attractions up here. to have this conversation, it's a glorious day indeed. is the twinky bar the most popular mark of America because of sentimental reasons or some form of world political stand over tactics because of the moon landing filmed in a studio persuasion ? 'throw enough mud, some of it sticks' kind of thing. The www. has been swept clean of any data related to these sensitive issues, it's way bigger than facebook ;) And other than the losses the united states suffered by neglecting the opportunities to support ABBA, Big mistake. Can you tell us from your personal experiences the impact and good fortune touched you when Paul Hogan put America on the maps ? Please speak freely as your emotions well up, we are very understanding people, you can cry it's ok, cries of joy bring well being. When in Sydney, bet my left knacker Bondi beach promotions will have you in their purse strings and nothing much we can do to change that, specifically train tracks, but the best waves are over on the Northern beaches. Anyhow when twurling your toes about in the sand looking out at the ocean at Bondi Beach, take a one eighty turn and take in the granduer 60 kms away west, the haze that give the Blue Mountains of the Great Dividing Ranges their name, is of the Eucalyptus oils evaporating out of the leaves of the eucalypts gum trees, protected by wildlife and Fauna, National Parks and the Rangers, skippy, Young Einstein and his cattle dog. If you head towards them mountains, we are at the foothills and have the sex swing set up finally, great opportunity to add as a rest stop in locations on your maps, best to add to the return trip, if you come here on your way you won't think in the state you would be, the chances as close as what fuck is to swearing near zero which we call naught, not that z is neglected, just American English spelling has been banned in 90 percent of the worlds populations, still think z is decriminalised in canberra. The Three Sisters up top of them mountains, Evans lookout and IMAX will take your breath away as you relate to the grandeur in front of you, please don't pat the koalas or the Triumphy Wom-Woms And keep in mind there is over 60 complaints world wide where there has been women report to have been raped by dolphins when swimming with each other.Swinging is a completely seperate activity and not related, so do drop in and join us, we can have Devonshire Tea, bob for apples, spin the bottle and the swing is set with the stirrups keeping the ankles high and wide and heavy duty spring the swing can be spin spun and spin to spun no problems it's a beauty:) Mado Mado Tara xx

They think we are just there for there entertainment especially on a site like this. That act super entitled and self centered. Be prepared for aggressiveness and rudeness if they are rejected and also outright racist comments that they don’t even know they are making. I am Australian but have lived and worked in many countries, Australian men are like visiting a caveman time, they have a long long way to go compared to how men treat us in other countries. So be really really specific what your looking for and that manners are an absolute must, you soon will find out if they are worth talking to after two or three emails. - Posted from rhpmobile

I am not in a position do defend the Australian male as I don’t know every single person, I can’t speak to the experiences you have had, and being cautious is always ok .... but everything I have seen and experienced does not lead me to the conclusion that Australian men are disrespectful. The only Australian man I can truly comment on and know deeply is me, and that is not me. However, I have also read plenty of forum topics regarding rejection, plenty of forum topics where women are genuinely hurting, and plenty of forum topics where a guy has asked an puerile question - and the vast majority of guys in their comments on those topics are decent, respectful and genuine. Yes, some men are tools but not all of us. And some women are tools as well, but not all of you. And every other gender identity can be tools as well, but not all.

Australian, Korean, Japanese and European mostly. See the occasional American muscle car, but only rarely. Unfortunately though our car manufacturing industry is shrinking so we do do a lot of imports. Depending on where you are traffic is no worst than any other major city, but the distances between cities can be considerable. But if you are not hiring a car, there are easy ways to get around. Part of the forever part in travelling is some of the road journeys are so so boring.
-
tcm70

You really should consider getting a hire car. At least in each city. I think you will be surprised by the size of our country and the diversity of it. You mentioned that while in Melbourne you’re going to visit an animal sanctuary in Yarra valley. That’d be in Healesville. Which is about 1-1.5 hrs out of the cbd. There is a zoo in Melbourne itself and an open range zoo in Werribee, tho personally I think Healesville would be better for overseas visitors as it’s all native animals whereas the other zoos you’d find the same animals as most zoos around the world. There’s also Phillip Island which is 1.5-2hrs drive south of Melbourne. Offers the penguin parade and koala park, and some other native wildlife parks. it’s those koalas that are referred to as drop bears so don’t linger under gum trees. Also some awesome beaches, including world class surf beaches and spectacular rugged coastline. Public transport will get you to all those areas and more, but you will be on a schedule and miss out on all the treasures in between. A bus won’t stop at whim for you to take photos. So as well as the size of Australia, I think you may also be surprised at how much is on offer to do and see. You will be surprised at the end of your tour how much you got to see yet how much more there is that you didn’t get to see. Whatever surprises you tho, I hope you enjoy your travels here cunt. 👍🏽

You will likely be surprised by the disconnect between the image of the typical Australian being the knock about larrikin and the reality that we really love our rules and are in general a follow the rules kind of society. As an aussie guy who spent 5 years living and working in Maine, I had first hand experience at comparing the idiosyncrasies of the aussie vs US language and lifestyle. Australians are definitely more laid back and don't take life as seriously, apart from their sport, of course. Check out the online Macquarie dictionary app. It's the official Aussie dictionary and includes virtually all the words including slang that you will come across over here. Because we don't take life as seriously, words here are used with less intent. As someone said previously, its how it's said. I found most Americans listen to the word but in Australia, its the tone and delivery which are the most important. Eg. "What are yous cunts doing here?", could be banter from one working class bloke to his mates (buddies) when he unexpectedly finds them at an event. On the other hand, the exact same phrase could also be used offensively at people being found by a security guard, in a place they shouldn't be. So listen to the tone and check out the facial expression. They'll tell much more than just listening to the words. Have fun in Aussie and remember that Australians love to 'take the piss' (make fun of everyone) They generally don't mean it seriously so it's best not to take it seriously. Which reminds me.... Aussie's don't get "pissed" unless they drink too much. But they do get "pissed off". 😆 - Posted from rhpmobile

Like has been said, they're both chips. But the one's in the plastic packet( crisps to you, I think ) are not Fries. If it wasn't for Macca's, Wendy's and Hungry Jacks( That's Burger King. The name was already trademarked when they came to Oz in the 1980's.. ) insisting that we call them "fries", then we probably wouldn't use that word. I'm kinda proud that aussies still resist completely adopting "fries", despite decades of the corporate might of the burger chains.But...go to any small, privately owned take-away food store and it will always be "chips" first. And, on cars.. A "truck" is a heavy axel, freight-carrying vehicle only. There is no "pick-up truck" here.Vehicles like the Toyota Hilux( like a Tacoma ) are 'Ute's".....or a Dual-cab ute( utility vehicle ). Big utes like Ford F250's are not as common here because our petrol is much more expensive.American cars in general are fairly expensive to buy and run here. But, we seem fond of our homegrown V8's.

I actually get cranky when people call their 4wds a truck.. I hit a wallaby in my car the other day (smaller version of a kangaroo) and I live in suburbia, he got up and hopped away, tough things they are. Koalas don't smell nice. You can buy crocodile pizza in Sydney (tough meat though) Supermarkets here sell kangaroo meat. Airlie Beach (the whitsundays) is worth a visit, whitehaven beach is stunning, you can go sailing on yachts, love, love that place.. The 12 apostles in Vic are pretty amazing, but they are along the great ocean road, at least an hour out, the road is breathtaking though and it is worth the trip. (I might pick you guys brain at a later date, planning a trip to see the Spruce goose in Oregon and grand canyon etc :D)

Most importantly if some says g'day mate as we all know its saying hello. If you pronounce it 'good eye might' your accent will make it sound like g'day mate lol. Sidewalks are footpaths, kiwis are New Zealanders, fanny is arse, fanny for us is your front bum lol. Melbourne is blessed with so many restaurants and cafes you can eat and drink until you explode. The rest of Victoria has lots of natural wonders so enjoy Healesville Sanctuary when you go there. As many dangerous animals as we have they aren't everywhere trying to take over 'planet of the apes' style, just be careful where you step. Go to the footy (AFL), it will totally confuse the hell out of you but you will see some big hits (collisions WITHOUT padding). When you visit Cairns, if you get hot swim in a pool. The sharks and stingers won't get you in the ocean because the crocs already ate them bahahahahahaha. Lots to see and do over here, just remember its a BIG country and sometimes it takes a long time to get places. Most of all, despite BBW80's comments, we are a very accommodating and respectful bunch of people who will help you to enjoy your stay as many of us have be shown by your countrymen when we visit the States. Don't be too loud or obnoxious and you'll fit right in with us crazy lot lol. Enjoy your trip and take home a suitcase full of lifetime memories! 😊😊 - Posted from rhpmobile

The closer to the equator, the slower the speech. Like your Texan drawl, Northern NSW, Queenslanders take forever to finish the sentence, getting sloooowerrr the further north you go South Australians have a English twang to their accent. Tasmania, they refer to everyone else as mainlanders.

Melbourne and Sydney are 2 completely different cities. Sydney is beautiful, mild weather eith lovely beaches and superficial people who are are snobbish and unfriendly and it's a bit dirty and easy to get lost. Melbourne has personality, an AMAZING music, theater and food scene, you'll experience all 4 seasons every day you're there so don't leave the house without a brolly (unbrella) and a parka (raincoat), wide brimmed hat, sunnies and good old spf50+. People here can be snobby too but in an aloof friendly behind your back way. Both cities have their merits and flaws. Both have great shopping. But are EXPENSIVE. Make sure you see the rugby in Sydney and an AFL game in Melbourne. The atmosphere alone is good reason to do so, regardless of either code and what teams are playing. - Posted from rhpmobile

Thanks again to everyone that has responded to this thread. Well, almost everyone. It's not surprising that different cities have different personalities. We have heard nothing but good things about the three cities we are visiting and much more about places we cannot get to this time. We hope this is the first of many trips. We will avoid ordering scallops. It sounds more confusing than the whole chips thing. We are going to attend an AFL game, but it will be in Sydney and not Melbourne because there are no games in Melbourne while we are there. If we have time, we will also get to a rugby match. What's a servo? Do Australians have garages or car parks? Yards or gardens? Erasers or rubbers? Elevators or lifts?
-

A servo is a petrol station, they sell petrol, diesel and gas. The gas is LPG which I think you call propane. We keep our cars and bikes in the garage. Shopping centres or malls have car parks. Rubbers are for the school kids with pencils. I use condoms, we also call them frangers.😜 We get the lift but if you ask where the elevator is you will be directed to the lift. You can also ride on the escalator. You will only find Quokka's in WA... WA is inhabited by Sand Gropers, SA by Crow Eaters, Victoria by Mexicans, NSW by Cockroaches, Queensland by Cane Toads and NT by... well Territorians. None of us are parochial.😇 We're fucking parochial cunts if you must know.😛 Have a great time

Oh...and I think it's Australia-wide that it's illegal to consume alcohol in a public, unlicensed place....like a park or down the beach, etc.Maybe with the exception of the Northern Territory. Details and penalties differ from state to state. It's definitely illegal to have an opened bottle or can of alcohol in a motor vehicle...that's considered proof of public drinking. Lot's of people still take a few beers down the beach or wherever...but keep it low profile.

If u want a KEBAB at midnight you have to ask for a gyros or souvlaki or whatever the fuck they call it down there. Haha Meander, they do have nice people in Mexico, and the kebabs are great, u just have to know which vendors around the markets to get them from.

Kebabs and souvlaki are different, hard to find a decent souvlaki in Brisbane, kebabs are way too plentiful. - Posted from rhpmobile

..We don't wear a "Sweater" when it's cold....we wear a Jumper. We don't Sweat...we Jump. No...actually, I have no idea why it's called that. Wouldn't want to..jump..to any wrong conclusions..

That definitely seems like an odd name for them. We call one piece women's shirt/pants outfits jumpers (short for jumpsuit). We certainly seem like two societies separated by a huge ocean and a common language. - Posted from rhpmobile

And I've known Kiwi's to call a ute a "truck." Never mind what a Dairy is.. Best we don't get into their colloquialisms....CplOH....you'll really be confused. Australians have a fairly close relationship with our neighbours across The Ditch( that's the Tasman Sea ) in New Zealand.Probably much the same with Canada?

Yes we love the US' hat. They're great! In all seriousness, yes, there is a close bond with Canada. The Canucks are great friends, trading partners, and allies. - Posted from rhpmobile

Bonefide Kebabs and souvlaki are different, hard to find a decent souvlaki in Brisbane, kebabs are way too plentiful. Curious Yes very true young lady, but whilst, in Victoria once a month we'd, (4-5 mates)drive three hrs to Melbourne to have a kebab, made by a lovely family. Can remember the shop name or even the suburb, but was close to famous Victoria markets. Possibly Brunswick or Sydney rd. When beconed ,Go get the girls from the markets, overnight at flash hotel do dinner, rest and next morning do breakfast some were nice before pottering off home. Hotels restaurants, and breakfast location always different. Just great to get out and about with good friends.

I noticed a few hotels that were really pubs when researching places to sleep. There was one pub in Sydney (Surry Hills area, if memory serves) that I searched their website to try to figure out how to book rooms. Needless to say, we are at a branded hotel in the CBD instead. - Posted from rhpmobile

As a proud Aboriginal visiting Cairns/Kuranda puts you a great spot to absorb some indigenous culture. Try Tjapukai Cultural Park or Bangarra Dance Troupe. Definitely an AFL or Rugby League game if to your taste !! Enjoy our wonderful country. - Posted from rhpmobile

When walking in the bush... Watch where you put your feet. (Snakes) Take water with you. Take warm clothes. Tell people where you are going and when you will be back. (Always, and always let them know you are back too) Don't go near water ways in the north. (Croc country) Use plenty of sunscreen if you're not wearing long clothes. (We have an ozone layer hole) Do not feed the wildlife. (It makes them aggressive) I dunno the name but in Queensland they have a very nasty plant in the bush, one touch and pain so bad you wish you were dead, probably shouldn't go hugging the trees. If you do drive and come across a road train (A prime mover with three trailers) allow plenty of clear visible road before trying to overtake, if you have to wait for opportunity to pass then wait. Emergency service number in Oz is 000 not 911. Avoid driving in the country at dawn and dusk. (This is when Roos choose to commit suicide) Well that's the basics. I hope you have a blast.. come see WA next time 😎😆😁😃 - Posted from rhpmobile

I don't know if you're beer or wine or drinkers of neither...but here's my 2 cents on beer. As mainstream, reasonably priced beer goes, I like the Coopers brand best....it's still 100% aussie owned and it's effectively home brew from a big brewer. I particularly like the extra stout. Strong and robust...good winter beer. Most mainstream aussie beers are same-same as the US...maybe just a bit stronger here on average. If IPA's are your thing, then Pirate Life is a company that do that well. Try the IIPA. 8.8% abv and half litre cans. I'm a big fan of imperial stouts when my wallet allows me...and if it's your thing too, then Epic, 8-Wired and Tuatara are top notch New Zealand brewers that can be bought here. For the fancier beers, all the big cities have plenty of boutique liquor stores( bottle shops ), but google your area first.

...And I should mention...alcohol is more expensive here than you'd be used to. More like Scandinavia's prices. Choose wisely..

Thanks for the recommendations. I will certainly try Cooper's while there. We will most likely also find our way to a brew pub or two while there. We enjoy those types of places. I've been told that most things will be more expensive than here in the 48 contiguous. Is alcohol especially more expensive or in line with most other things? - Posted from rhpmobile

Nah...beer and wine isn't crazy expensive. ( Unless you're somewhere really remote like a roadhouse on the Nullarbor Plain...then it is ) But, the fancier imported craft beer is pricey. Sierra Nevada, Ballast Point and stuff like that is not bad...but I'm sure it's cheaper at home. It's hardly nectar and ambrosia, but you should have a taste of the mainstream stuff if you haven't already. The blue collar, working class beers that have been around for many decades....iconic beers like VB, XXXX, Melbourne Bitter, Emu, Coopers, etc. ( And not Fosters. No-one drinks Fosters.. )I hate to sound cliche, but those are the beers that the national identity was forged on....not the "chill filtered", piss-weak crap that turned up in the 90's. And are still the best-selling beers in the country, despite what some Corona swilling millennial might tell you.Even goon( touche Mea.. ).. And each state has always been viciously loyal to their working class beer. Queensland has XXXX( Fourex ), Victoria has Victoria Bitter, Western Australia has Emu, South Australia has Coopers...I don't know the rest. Those ponces in Sydney probably sold out long ago to the god of Corona, Heineken and Stella Artois..

I will certainly sample these while there. I'm known to enjoy just a simple Bud Light occasionally, so I look forward to downing a few of the Australian equivalents. I also don't plan to drink any beers I can easily find here, sticking with the local brews instead. This means I may not blend in well while I Sydney since I won't be drinking Corona. 😁 - Posted from rhpmobile

Haven't read all responses but good on you for choosing to travel in our friendly shores. I've lived in various big cities in the US for Work and can definitely say Melbourne is a great place to visit for many reasons stated above. Very comparable to many great cities overseas but best, personally, for the openness and warmth of the people. Lots would go out of their way to help you out if you are lost. Melbourne is a foodie's Mecca in Australia if not the World. I'm a foodie and the selection, diversity and quality of cuisine is fantastic even in the city. All within walking distance in the city. Get Groupon (Google it) dining vouchers near your hotel to help ease your dining expenses worries without compromising experience and quality. Feel free to message me for some recommendations within and outside the city. Great offerings for all budgets. And btw, when someone ask you to 'have tea' with them, don't take that literally. To have 'tea' means dinner. 'Supper' is late light meal apres dinner. Don't get that mixed up. 😉 Enjoy your trip and try to blend in with the hoi polloi in terms of not being too loud. Unfortunately the Americans do have a rep down under. But keep it light go with the flow and don't trash our footie, beers and weather. The latter specially in Melbourne. Lol. All I can say is bring your brolly and adopt a layering fashion sense.😎 You're welcome.
