Yeah, I knew nothing of Perth at the time i moved here. I guess with the mining in full boom, the fifo workers were taking all available accomodation at top dollar prices. I thought it would be easy to find share accomodation as there was plenty advertised online. But, to my surprise, almost all were "taking interviews" for 2 weeks or so. This wasnt like the Gold Coast, which is pretty relaxed when it comes to renting and sharing. One woman wanted to know my roster, so she could plan her social calender around when i was away. That didnt feel very welcoming, so gave that one a miss. Another woman DIDN'T want a fifo housemate because she wanted some company all the time. What the..? I couldnt start working until i had a home, and it took me 2 weeks of almost daily interviews. How times have changed..

That begs the question, would the topic have been reopened or was an identical one started? Only the person restarting it would know the answer to that. I'm not aware of the topic you mean but I assumed once a topic was closed, that was it? Either way, no law against starting another one though I guess
-

I was told l was welcome to start a new thread. No offer to reopen was given, hence this one volume 3. Of course being closed is different to being deleted. The mods are time sensitive. Wasting time sorting out our shit isn't a high priority. So easier for them to close or delete than wade through and clean. So requests to reopen is time wasteful to them. I thought Meander's birthday thread was reopened but may have that wrong?

One's definition of Trolling is subjective and can be a broad generalisation. In the 2 recent examples that I was referring to, both OP's, by their own omission, posted topics for the specific purpose of steering the thread to a final outcome and laying blame to specific persons.Perhaps troll is an incorrect terminology and open to hear suggestions that more accurately describes the behaviour of posting in ways to cause others to respond in a predetermined manner for your own purpose
-

Meander's birthday thread was not reopened. That was a mistake, by Gazpacho, which I explained at the time. We did have a thread, before your time Annie, that disappeared and reappeared after it had been cleansed. Touch, I feel like the mods believe the fora needs a thread like this.
-

To me, trolling is when someone is purposely trying to elicit negative reactions from others. They're shit-stirring basically. I know people often refer to others who simply disagree with them as trolls, but that's an incorrect use of the term IMO.
-
RHP User
Meander didn't close her own thread though, she was as surprised as anyone else. But more disappointed than anyone I imagine. I suppose it only needs one comment to get the ball rolling if you know your audience. How do you describe your comments that predefine a likely reaction? Peachy

Some might have said the OP was seeking a negative reaction, from particular people, but the reaction could also have been anticipated as likely because of the topic and OP. However you look at it, we're responsible for our own behaviour. 🍑y,
-
RHP User

If someone makes up a story specifically to try and stir up certain reactions then to me that's trolling. The irony is that had it been a legitimate story and not a very obvious attempt to stir, then they most likely would have received much different responses. If you put rubbish out don't be surprised if people throw it back at you.

I was asking as I saw a topic recently closed which to me, looked as though for no apparent reason. Perhaps posts were deleted... I asked about reopening as I would like to reopen one of mine from years back. It was a good topic with i sightfull posts. It was derailed by someone who got banned from the forum for their brutal judgements of others. - Posted from rhpmobile

Are just bored shitless and want some fun, humour and a stir. Like sitting around with your group of mates singling out one to take a bit of shit for a while, all in jest mind you. But here not on as consideration for others is paramount. But most have already said everything else that is viable
-

weren't bored shitless I don't think. They were passionate about their views being validated and sought to engineer that result. The latter, closing the thread with the last word so as to boast how right he was. But really, if his arguement was to hold up, an open thread would not threaten the validation. The final words, "I wanted to go out on my terms" sums it up.Bit like taking my bat and ball and fucking off............Fuck yas all

Shades of Trolling. I think we all know what trolling is even though we might define it differently.
-

I suspect we're talking about different threads. :-) Inspirit, the one I mean ended up effecting the whole fora because of the outlook toward what one person said. That was up to the many individuals who decided what they thought was more important than what anyone else said. It could have been described as trolling behaviour. Mainly said because it would make more sense if we looked at and controlled our own behaviour.

I'm not sure who you're meaning for the second person Annie. But I have a different point of view considering the harassment and judgement before, during, and after the thread you mention. I thought the OP successfully made their general point, and I can understand them realising they were wasting their time and then deciding to lock & leave. The thread stands the way it was posted with minimal deletions. And I still object to gratuitous swearing when it comes across as trolling. 🍑y, just my point of view sans buddies to back me up. 🍑y

The other thread was "doing a female for no return" A fairy tale for the purpose of calling out posters.. I got called out by taking exception to the title. Most realised it from the start by the serial nature of the OP. Closed by management.

An article I came across late last year gave examples of different types of trolls that I won't go into but this is a good read also and probably more important. Use google if you want to find the article. Other General Tactics For Dealing With TrollsWhen dealing with suspected trolls, there are various strategies that you can employ. First of all, remember that just because you suspect that someone is a troll, it doesn't mean that they are a troll; also, just because you suspect someone is genuine, it doesn't mean that they are genuine. In view of this, the best tactics are:Write to the postmaster of the troll's domain. Keep it simple, polite and to the point (they are very busy!). Include your evidence (e.g.: offensive emails) and the full email header information, so that the troll can be properly traced.Write to the listmaster to highlight what is happeningif you must respond to a troll posting, don't get involved in the argument; limit it to pointing out that the posting may be considered as trollish, for the benefit of other list members.if you do get involved in anyone, seek out verifiable data. Trolls will provide some data that will lead to dead ends; real people will provide some data that is open-ended and leads to a myriad of sources which enable you to verify their genuine statusbeware of off list emails that praise and flatter, or seem to evoke sympathy. If you feel yourself beginning to like someone, ask first: how much verifiable data do I have about them?don't invest any of your self emotionally until you have verified beyond all doubt that the person you are dealing with is genuineignore postings that you suspect may be from trolls.

Strategic TrollsStrategic trolls often operate in groups, rather than alone. They use multiple personalities, each of which uses the techniques outlined in the section on tactical trolls. However, they have an overall strategy for drawing bona fide list members into argument, ultimately causing them to leave, or for the trolls to dominate of the group.

Seems to me that some folk have lost their sense of humour lately. sometimes, comments are just funny....not trolling. Question....How important is a sense of humour when playing in the sandpit, laugh along with others and the ability to be able to have a laugh at yourself?

Well said miss Ruby Humour expresses itself when ego is in check and the owner isn’t so invested in pushing a particular image facade on the world to hide their insecurities. If someone takes themself too seriously, I’d suggest open forums aren’t the playground for them Humour is vital (but subjective) 😁

When I read the word, I think of the cave troll in The Fellowship of the Ring...which I think was a good representation. Big, dumb and not to be fucked with.. Or.. In Iceland, the fairy tales talked of trolls in the gullies, grottoes and the like. In winter, with metres of snow covering these grotesque lava formations, it was easy to see where the tales had come from. Not like here, where the land is much older, rounded and worn down by the ages.

...Whenever you have silly thoughts about food hitting the floor and whether it's still good to eat...think about your poor phone. Here's hoping it makes it through the night.. PS. The longer you can fight the temptation to switch it on and see if it still works, the better its chances will be.

Just to make it clear I wasn't using it at the time, it fell out of my pocket. I couldn't turn it off and of course I had to stupidly get it out of the rice and try to use it. I was drunk after all. Any smart thinking had gone down the drain like the shots my friends made me drink. Someone off here KIKed me a picture and as I was trying replying the screen icons started to kind of melt and swirl in front of my eyes. I take that as a bad sign. For either the phone or my eyes. Food on the floor its 5 second rule all the way. Unless its soup.
