Girl Power

November 14 2015

Tomorrow night the UFC..Ultimate Fighting Championships are holding an event in Melbourne which will be screened across the country in pubs and clubs,The event features four matches between women. The main event is Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm..Michelle Payne winning Melbourne Cup jockey will be there, adding her support.. Ten years ago an event like this could probably never have. happened. So my question is.do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing..this is a somewhat violent sport, and do women need to do this,do you think it is empowering or are we just buying into a violent culture?..xxFreya

Quoting 'Stirry' think you're comparing apples and oranges.... The biggest point of all is that formula 1 racing, v8 Supercars, golf, cricket, bus riding etc....are sports where the objective ISN'T to deliberately hurt your opponent..... UFC is....if it weren't than the judges would be scoring based upon technique; not the amount of successful blows you can deliver...nor would a KO be considered the grand poo bah of a win..... Don't you think it makes it more about the successful brutality, than the sport, fitness, discipline that so many are quick to promote?? - Posted from rhpmobile Its all about technique. These guys are the best of the best. You have olympic medalist competing. you have division one wrestlers competing , you have ex boxers with multiple championship titles fighting in ufc. same with muay thai , you have the best jui jitsu fighters on the planet competing in ufc..Do you really believe a fighter who doesnt have world class technique could survive against a ufc fighter? These fighters train extremely hard to be the best in the world at what they do . Its all about technique and skill.Alot of the blood you see is mainly from scar tissue opening up. The damage is very little compared to rugby, motor racing even cheerleaders suffer more injuries than ufc fighters do.Maybe on screen it looks violent. But thats mainly because most people dont understand the technique and skill involved.Rugby , boxing, motor racing all have serious injuries that you just dont see on tv..They show you very little of the actually violence that takes place in alot of sports..sorry but i think its relative.

as the scoring of the bouts are not encouraging... I do respect that it takes a lot of skill, discipline, fitness, the multiple disciplines these fighters posess, and I've also seen the rules thanks to S on the loose pointing me In the right direction, but the points awarded are not for that of technique but about the outcome....which I think should be more reflective of that...how that would be engineered I've not a clue.... - Posted from rhpmobile

The goal for competitors in motor sports is to get around a race circuit quicker than your opponents. Deaths and injuries happened when the racing machines evolved beyond the tracks or the drivers piloting them. Something had to give in an environment of continual prototype development. Soft flesh is the most vulnerable ingredient in the cocktail. In the MMA octagon, the rules of the sport appear to support bludgeoning ones opponent whilst they're in a defensive posture on the ground. Am I half asleep here? Because I don't see the comparisons in motor racing. Do motor sports rules now condone deliberately running ones opponent off the track with the intent to cause harm? I'm all for technical martial sports...but I believe that MMA has been rekindled in our modern times to satisfy a lust for blood and violence that boxing and the like were not satisfying. Or...to be more honest with ourselves...when has it ever been about satisfying the people, when they can be convinced what they want is what is what they're told they want...and they will happily fork out their hard earned dollars in the belief that they are exercising their free will. It's the return of the gladiators of old...spilling blood to the cheers of the crowd, but in the guise of sportsmanship of course. We always love to see sportsmanship in gratuitous violence...it must be our way of differentiating ourselves from the animals. They spill blood out of hunger and in defence. Pitiful, lowly creatures. We do it for fun.

Sean Connery gets a hate club, misogynistic jokes are shouted down, but this thug can beat the shit out of a guy and no one says a peep. Disappointing.

I don't think it should be called that as sports is competition.Martial arts is now a sport and there is no blood as it is on points and tactics.UFC and boxing is all about the violence and even though thereare points scored the fight continues even if one is bleeding.

its like a soldier who spends a lot of time training for war but never gets to put anything to work so to speak ,theses ppl which I don't mention gender is that these athletes train for years to prove themselves in this sport and its not to beat the other person tho that is how they win but to see how well they have trained and put it to good use,why train so hard and never get to find out how good you really are,and arnt we all equal ,women want to have the same rights but now its different because its fighting, ask Rhonda if believes she dosnt deserve to be in the ring after all her hard work,i say if you don't like this sport or any other thing in life just don't butt in and keep to yourself,we are all swingers here in sum way and we don't want ppl butting in on our way of life

how do you go from UFC to swinging and trying to relate it to be remotely the same?? As for the analogy about war....well I disagree....I've never known any soldier that signs up to the military so they can head off to war at their first opportunity just so their training was worth it....lol - Posted from rhpmobile
