Sad Songs

June 22 2018

Because I often think in music I find songs have significant meaning for me in sad and happy times. Music has helped me through some of the most difficult times in my life. What you song/songs do you put on when you are feeling sad about a person or relationship, breakup, heartache or one that has special meaning for you, for whatever reason in that context? I have whole playlists of these songs but one that I come back to a lot is Innerbloom by Rufus (Recent name change to Rufus Du Sol) The lyrics and vocals are just so melancholic and I like the fact that it is 9 minutes long so I can really sink deep. Not that I'm walking around in a state of despair but I like to have them there when I need them. Also Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye/Kimbra. I could never imagine this could happen but then it did. That you can feel so strong, then feel nothing much at all, still kind of freaks me out and puzzles me how human emotions work? Anyways interested to hear your thoughts on any of the above and might get a few gems to add to the playlist.

I am the same I find music is very important. I really like that Goyte song, but the ones I have been listening to a bit is 'These Days' by The Foo Fighters, Guy Sebastians 'Battle scars' and 'Bloodstone', saw him live at Dreamworld and got hooked. Dua Lipa 'IDGAF' Macklemore 'Good old days'Rihanna 'Stay' and Pearl Jam 'Just Breathe' I think my mood may have been a bit dark lol

Bright Eyes by Art Garfunkel. Garfunkel has a beautiful voice. Spicks and Specks; I started a joke....by the Bee Gees. Both such simple compositions. And tragic sounding. Heartbreaker by Dionne Warwick, while we're on Bee Gees songs. Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits. I believe it's an anti-war song, actually...but it sounds so sad. Last Mistake by James Blunt. I like Jimmy....he does a good sad song. Hurt by Johnny Cash. Maybe not sad, but there's a tragic sound to this one. ( Are you ) The one that I've been waiting for? By Nick Cave. Love this song. What a voice!

I've actually stopped playing sad songs in those moments or times, years back, as I found it somewhat unhelpful for my recovery, so to speak. And I've got A Lot of music here to choose from. I guess, one that comes to mind, is Roxy Music's "Over You". Since db died, "Life on Mars" makes me sad. There's a few Enya tracks too, "Evening Falls", I think. Nice topic, thought provoking. Mr. urn. .

There's plenty; including things like movie scores etc. One example of a different cultural (African) style, from a movie, is called Kothbiro, from the movie The Constant Gardener. I will second Mad World also. Others may be I Grieve by Peter Gabriel, Angel by Sarah McLachlan. More personally, there's a couple of songs of significance because they were played as odes at two seperate but related funerals. My Heart Will Go On was one played on flute but the full song though doesn't have a great effect. However the second was the traditional Hallelujah (also in many movies eg Shrek). I am still likely to cry when I hear that in any context. Of my own songs, I have also written and recorded one referring to a loss, directly personal and as such personally very moving. - Posted from rhpmobile

Great thread EarthQueen Sometimes I don't want to feel all cheery and sad songs are the bomb! I have a few collected over time that have me connecting with the depth of the feelings expressed, I have been known to shed a tear or two. Somebody I used to know is beautiful and the clip for it speaks volumes to back up the words of the song. A few of mine then... Jackie by Girl Overboard (this comes with a content warning for the topic raised). I favour the video again where I heard this song first, so visual. It reminds me of someone I loved who should have been the person to me that Jackie was to the young girl in this story. Again, it is a tragedy on a tragedy. Remind Me by Conrad Sewell, another one where the video came first, the whole experience caught me and it wasn't till I saw it the second time that I realised what the story being told was. I feel the beauty that makes that loss all the more bitter sweet. Some Nights by Fun, love the clip again, it shows the ripping apart of families in war when sides have to be chose. Hazard by Richard Marx, I don't relate to this story personally but the lies and accusations by the small town folk that made the tragedy more of a tragedy than it already was breaks my heart. They're all strong songs and some of my favourites, oh yes, must remember Puff, The Magic Dragon and the story of the loss of imagination, probably one of my first heart breaking moments as a child and then as an adult as I realised the fullness of the loss of childhood imagination. Peachy, naw, going to set up a list and listen to them all again very soon.

Peachy remember bawling my eyes out to that when my son was around school age and I was pondering that he would eventually possibly lose that childlike innocence , grace and wonder that was so beautiful about him. He just turned 15 yesterday. I'm such a sook, especially when it comes to sentimental moments with my kids. He's still a sweetheart( in between testosterone filled episodes.)

Taking a wee peek at my library: "Trembling Hands'' by Temper Trap ''All I Want Is You'' by U2 - epic, grand, a beautiful sentiment and one of the greatest guitar outros in history (in my opinion) ''The Drugs Don't Work'' by The Verve, which I think is about a loved one's dying days - so really doubling down there "I'm On Fire'' by Bruce Springsteen - to date one of the most haunting and desperately lonely songs I have ever heard Pretty much the entire "Wicked Game'' album by Chris Isaak. Watching funerals in the rain, anyone? "Amsterdam'' by Coldplay. Yes, Coldplay ''Don't Believe Anymore'', by the consummate pop perfectionist Icehouse (who really only ever were Iva Davies and a few hangers-on) ''Hung My Head'', by Johnny Cash. I get tingles even thinking about this song. Good old high plains tragedy - manslaughter and hanging. ''Try Again'' by Keane. "Tonite'' by LCD Soundsystem. You too can feel old, used up and obsolete whilst grooving to the pulsing electro! A wolf in a dancing sheeps' clothing "Strong'' by London Grammar - too beautiful a song to kill yourself to, but it does try "I Fall To Pieces'' by Patsy Cline. We've all felt this song, each and every one of us. "In The Cold Light Of Morning'' by Placebo. Regrets, he's had a few. ''Sweetness Follows'' by REM. Yet more death, anyone? "Legs'' by ZZ Top

No post away. As a fellow music lover it always interests me how music influences and shapes peoples lives. I'm a music bore TBH. So too much is never enough. I just love how some artists feel like they are speaking to you and are so articulate with their lyrics. I wish that I learned to play an instrument when I was younger. Your songs all sound very interesting, I like your taste in music. Mad World I love the Donnie Darko version too. Black its my favorite Pearl Jam song. Theres lots of Sia songs on my playlists. Another childhood artist, I used to sit at the shop and listen to him being played from our house across the road. His Hot August Night Album (The first) in particular, incidentally they brought out the 40th Anniversary album a few years ago that included songs from the performance that wasn't on the original album. I do enjoy live performances I found out they had skipped some of the performance and added those parts to the 40th Anniversary version that came out a few years ago. Sometimes when in the sad place and wanting to wallow a bit, what I often listen to are *happy* songs, because when you hear those good, positive songs it can make your own hurt that much more acute. Kinda selfish, but I think everyone has been there more than once. They have to be the right songs though - not boppy happy, or lovey dovey happy. Some examples: Zero 7 - Destiny. If you think the vocals are good on this it is because it is Sia. The pain with this one comes from wishing that you had - or still had - someone who aches to be with you like she does in the song. Gary Moore - Like Angels. He knocked this one out of the park, a stunning, heartfelt vocal performance - fuck that man could sing when he really wanted to - and beautiful guitar work because nobody did bends like Gary. Shadow Gallery - Vow. The album might not be to everyones taste - it's concept prog metal - but this song, where the protagonist sings of his love and desire to protect the woman he loves, reaches into your chest and mercilessly rips out your heart. And as it soars with one of the best outros to any song ever, if there is a dry eye in the house then they are a harder soul than me. - Posted from rhpmobile

Quoting 'MFW_23' I'm totally hogging the thread...but I keep remembering more! This Woman's Work by Kate Bush. I was reminded about it when I started watching the second season of The Handmaid's Tale. Such a beautiful song. MFW I am a massive Kate Bush fan. I love this song so much so that I printed out the lyrics and gave them to a graphic designer friend who did the most amazing drawing incorporating the lyrics. This picture takes pride in my home, in a relevant place for those days when I don't think I can. I read and I can. The lyrics are inspiring and the song always makes me bawl I also love Placebos cover of Running Up that Hill. I read recently that this song is the most covered of all of Kate Bushs work. Country Touch I have the soundtrack of the Constant Gardener and agree Kothbiro is hauntingly beautiful and so is the other piece on there, call the Funeral I think. There so many great songs listed already, some I don't know but will investigate, thankyou for adding to a new playlist for me A few to add Can we still be friends ? - Todd Rudgren - a old oneAint no Sunshine when she's gone - Bill WithersLayla - Eric Clapton (all that yearning)A 1000 times - Hamilton LeithauserIn This Shirt - the IrepressibleLove will Tear Us Part - Joy Division or any of the millions of coversTeardrop -Jose Gonzalez or Massive AttackHeartbeats - Jose GonzalezHow to fight Loneliness - WilcoLooking - Lights Fade LowDeath with Dignity - Sujhan StevensI Need You - Nick CavePeople aint no good - Nick CaveSomeone Like You - AdeleThese Days - Powderfinger The Way we Were - Barbra Streisand, my sister used to play this song over and over after every breakup, every single breakup. I’m scared I’ll go overboard here, I’ll try and keep my post relatively concise. There’s so many songs that get me through down times through a variety of emotions. I find the beauty and feeling of sad songs to be uplifting, in times of sadness a good deep song is far more likely to bring happiness than a happy song as a happy song can make me feel worse at times as my mood can’t match the vibe. In no particular order follows a list of some of the songs I could bring to mind that I love listening to in my down times. M.ward with Lucinda Williams- oh lonesome me. M.ward also has a few others, let’s dance(Bowie cover), Vincent O’Brien, and ironically one called Sad sad song. Bon Iver- Skinny love Chris Wilson, live at the continental album- you will surely love again. Dirty Three- Ever since, In Fall, It happpened and sad sexy. A lot more from them to but I’ll leave it there from them. Gomez- cry on demand, see the world, chasing ghosts with alcohol. Josh Rouse- late night conversation, the white trash period of my life. Moby- why does my heart feel so sad. Spain- the entire blue moods of Spain album. Tom Waits- shore leave Willard Grant Conspiracy- skeleton, breach, dance with me, let it roll. Let it roll is more of a boost up song, very nick cavish, powerful song. Robert fisher the singer has an amazing voice. And of course I can’t go without adding any Nick Cave- the ship song, into my arms, the weeping song,Jesus of the moon, breathless. So many others from him to. There she goes my beautiful world. My songs have a wide variety of tempo and deepness, some sound more boppy than a sad song should I guess but they have all been there for me when I need them.

Randy Newman - It's a Jungle Out There (it's the theme from Monk, I feel his pain) It's a jungle out there Disorder and confusion everywhere No one seems to care Well I do Hey, who's in charge here? It's a jungle out there Poison in the very air we breathe Do you know what's in the water that you drink? Well I do, and it's amazing People think I'm crazy, 'cause I worry all the time If you paid attention, you'd be worried too You better pay attention Or this world we love so much might just kill you I could be wrong now, but I don't think so 'Cause there's a jungle out there It's a jungle out there It's a jungle out there Violence and danger everywhere It's brother against brother Pouding on each other Like they would make a mess It's a jungle out there It's a jungle here too You got a tap right on your phone A microphone and camera check on everything you do Call it paranoia as the saying goes Even paranoids have their meek I'm not the one who's crazy, I'm not afraid of them They're afraid of you and me I could be wrong there, but I don't think so 'Cause it's a jungle out there It's a jungle out there It's a jungle out there Even the cops are scared today So if you see a uniform Do exactly what they say Or make a run for it I'm only kidding with ya 'Cause it's a jungle out there It's a jungle out there

Thanks for your input I was going to reply more individually but I have an assignment due , ugh. Maybe later. But love your choices. What gets me about sad songs and what I actually find comforting is when a songwriter manages to express the exact emotions I am feeling ,with the words I am thinking, I actually feel less alone because I know out there in the world someone is experiencing the same things as me. Its not just me, if that makes sense xxx. Hope this didn't make anyone feel to sad on reflection. Sometimes I feel just surrendering to the sad is the best step for moving on for me. Just let myself feel it and then get up again. Somehow i forgot my saddest of sad songs, which is No Ones Gonna Love You (More Than I Do) by Band Of Horses. They do sad well and its very personal for me.

Your second last post, specifically the part that Mfw quoted speaks for me in total. We all struggle in life with what’s thrown at us. And yet, to see that our every angst can be created into something magical that fills our being at times, with such astounding reflection, makes each and every song listed amongst this thread true gems. We all have our tastes and needs but I think out of all the formats of expression, that music is the one true source for each of us that We can watch with our eyes closed, we can hear it with our hearts empty or full. Whether lyrics or just instrumental, it’s the feelings that stem from the songs that resound with us all to fit our own personal reasons. It’s been a lovely thread to read thru, no animosity at all has stemmed anywhere in any comments for once. It just shows that music is a universal language that can bring everyone together. I love sad songs, movies and books because the really good ones can temporarily, even physically manipulate me. That through audio and visual...and written, surprisingly...they can bring a shift in emotions and even a few tears rolling down the cheek. It's impressive...and I know there's a lot of factors involved...but even the notes and chords are enough. I suppose, that I take pride in keeping control. I reckon most of us do. And then finding...again and again...that that's just an illusion.

It may have already been mentioned.... too many posts to read & check! So many awesome songs mentioned... many of my favorites. We have a fantastic mix of music lovers here on pie 👍 The theme song from the film Mahogany, sung by Diana Ross, who recorded it in 1975. The lyrics are mesmerising and haunting.

Quoting 'Koolgrey' Whenever I hear Sound of Silence now, I think of the opening credits to the Watchmen movie.Despite that I've known it for much longer, they matched that song to movie absolutely spot on. I would imagine, by now most people have heard Disturbed's rendition of Sounds of Silence. If not do yourself a favour...spine chilling

..I'm not a fan of Disturbed's cover. Interestingly, I was at work 2 weeks ago...and I was talking Simon and G's classics with a Korean workmate, when she asked me, "So....what did you think of Disturbed's version..?" I was glad it's not just me, then. She thought the same. Honestly...I think it's an unoriginal cover. Not terrible, by any means...just an average copy.

Eric Clapton - Tears in heaven. Don't know how he can even get through the song about the death of his young son. To get a bit dark - anything by The Smiths

I still can't get through "Brick" by Ben Folds without feeling absolutely awful and needing some happy music directly afterwards. It's not even the topic matter (contentious as it is), just the way the whole song sounds so tragic.

I have a deep fondness for "The Young New Mexican Puppeteer" by Tom Jones. An oldie from 1972 that I didn't hear till I bought an CD/album of his as an adult. It's sad and hopeful. Peachy

Can't stop listening to him lately. What an amazing songwriter. I find most of his songs have a wistful, emotive, nostalgic feel that makes my heart twinge. His Best of, B sides and Rarities album is magic Confessions For You1,2,3 Alll of them really. I keep listening to his song The Summer to try and get me through this cold, bitey, dark season. "We should be living like we lived that summerI wanna live like we live in the summer So if I could bottle up the sea breeze I would take it over to your house And pour it loose through your garden"

Quoting 'MFW_23' I had forgotten about that I heard last night. Belly - Feed The Tree. The lyrics have a poignant melancholy to them, about growing up, getting older, and eventually dying. Beautiful song. Yes forgot about this too. Haven't heard it in years. Thanks. Love her voice and great songwriting for someone so young. Just found that the actual song has its own Wikipedia page LOL. The music nerd burns strong in this one

Meander, I love that song to, tho not so much a sad song for me. More nostalgic as was a good campfire song with family and friends back in the day. So brings happy memories to me. It’s fascinating thought tho about how we associate songs to memories, adding to the sadness, or happiness that the song prevokes. What may be a sad song to some could have an entirely different emotional feel to others.

I have another song to add to the list, tho I’m going to explain first before I mention the song and artist, and for why it’s extra sad due to recent circumstances. I’ve always loved music from very early, I was fortunate enough to have a couple of uncles that loved music, played guitars and introduced me to all the 50, 60 and early 70’s music. So being a very young fella with a naive sense of what the lyrics were about in most songs, I purchased my mother, after the arrrival of my younger brother a single vinyl of a song that I thought was appropriate to now having a brother. The only lyrics I think I knew at the time of the song were ‘two little boys, with two little toys, each had a wooden horse”. Sounded pretty cool to me back then when I was still proudly boasting of the training wheels on my pushy or treadly. Was years later that I realised the depth of the song but by then it was a memory my mother proudly shared to my embarrassment when she’d declare it was the first ever gift I bought her. Many years later, ie recent times, the artist that performed the song on that little vinyl has beeen proven to not such a person I wish to share a memory with. And for me that’s extremely sad because now the connotations to the song that was once a connection to my childhood has been sadly ruined. I won’t mention the name of the artist or what he did. But those of you who might know the tune should understand.

Jake the Peg was popular, and I always thought it was creepy. I used to love the ad lib radio version of I Touch Myself (2001), posted about it in the forum enough times, now there is disgust. I got married a few hundred metres away from his memorial in Bassendean (that was ripped up and destroyed very soon after the sentence). I have one single remaining from my records, it's Two Little Boys. It reminds me of my little foster bro and our wooden horses. It's big week for me as the National Redress Scheme rolls out, same day as my foster brother's birthday, haven't seen him for over 20 years... Peachy

💕 I’m guessing that may stir up lots of emotions for you. Hope it’s helps you continue to move forward. I don’t know much about it but just wanted to say hope you are ok. MFW - Two Little Boys has a lovely sentiment even though the writer was questionable. Don’t be embarrassed because your original intention remains true and innocent and that’s all that matters. - Posted from rhpmobile

This song is performed perhaps in a hard rock style, and has also been essentially bastardised by a certain popular mid chorus chant, but The Angels: Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, is actually a sad song. It was written about a band member's girlfriend who went missing and was never found. The lyrics read on their own are actually quite sad. - Posted from rhpmobile

Thanks EarthQueen, I much appreciate your sensitivity. My mood has suited the weather these last few days but while those are sensitive memories for me, I feel safe to share them here and hope no one takes how I feel personally because I don't. It was tcm70 who posted rather than MFW though. Luka, I know that song and a lot of the lyrics Hawt, but hadn't made the connection to the topic until I looked into the lyrics today. Thanks for that. It reminds me of Savage Garden's 'Two Beds and a Coffee Machine'. Countrytouch I didn't know, I'll never view Am I Ever Going to See Your Face Again?, I'm sure you know the chant that's popular to be sung with the chorus. That will never pass my lips again. Peachy, I do have the best lil sis a girl could ask for... she's been waving at me frantically on facebook

Correction. My bad... Re: The Angels: Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again My original source was a music discussion on ABC radio heard recently. Maybe I misheard it. Mmmm... Wikipedia and other sources mention the inspiration of the song was Neeson's close friend who lost his girlfriend in a motorcycle accident, and is referencing the possibility of life after death. Was originally recorded as a ballad. Audience improvisation, apparently via playback at discos etc then while live, eventually made it into a CD released track of a live concert recording, making it ever more popular.

I think of you. To the great man who wrote this song, i say thanks. One of the greatest song about loss ever written. Played at my girfriends funeral 1985 . Taken by cancer at 23. Closure, it doesn't exist, you never truly recover. Getting misty just writing this.

No worries you deserve them. 👌🏻Just closed my profile down for a while. Got such cabin fever tonight bored AF. Need myself a music loving wing person to watch some music with, bonus points if they were FWB. Instead I’ll probably drink wine and listen to it on Spotify instead .
