Seems I'm not the only one with an appreciation for good design. Over the years there have been many products come to market which have actually regressed in some aspects of design. Your post regarding the spoon reminds me of a very simple example to illustrate this phenomena: I have a teaspoon which I acquired over twenty five years ago now. It differs in design and style from all of the others I have had before and since. It became my favourite because unlike every other teaspoon I have ever had, or have ever tested, it functions silently when stirring. It is shaped such that you can hold the spoon handle vertical in your cup/mug/vessel, resting the side edge of the spoon's bowl against the side of your drinking vessel, and tracing the inner surface of the cup, it never breaks contact with the cup, and never make any of those irritating clinking noises. It's a very small thing, I know, but pleasing nonetheless.

I was delighted, I just couldn't believe you said no to Mrs Urn. :-D You hit on a couple of funny coincidences for me. I have photos of a cutlery set from a holiday house we visited because I loved the brilliance of the knife design in particular. I found the name of the design (Amalfi) by accident when I was looking at Flybuy rewards. The set I was looking at was a different brand though. We ordered it anyway... and because of the numbers of disappearing cutlery in the house, have put it away for now... aside from a teaspoon I keep next to the laptop. Funny, right. That tickled my funny bone and that is pleasing indeed! Cheers, Peachy

I believe you can still "Go Ogle" the net to find it: "The case of the disappearing teaspoons: longitudinal cohort study of the displacement of teaspoons in an Australian research institute". Megan C.S. Lim, Margaret E. Hellard, Campbell K. Aitken. I should point out, my prized teaspoon was not pilfered from said research institution!

on my walk the other night, walking with conviction you might say, just the right amount of ass cheek showing out of my ripped shorts, and these two tradies started with the wolf whistles, calling out, slowly driving past, I just smiled, to kind of let them know that was okay, I was cool with it, made me feel good. Walked a bit further and they'd stopped or pulled over to the side of the road having a good look, I walked past, then they came past again and it all started again, really loud and right near me, smiled again as they went past. All good, until I walk around the corner and up this little hill and there they are stopped at a set of light hahaha yep off they went again. I walked past again and was that it, nooooooo then the lights changed and by now I was on a main road, which they turned onto and came past again. More whistling and calling out Love tradies, classy as

Preface: I was on day 20 of my 26 day swing on site and looking for to a RDO after 13 days straight. Did it happen? NO. Instead, I left work early on Saturday and jumped on a bus bound for Exmouth. I was off to swim with Whale Sharks. About the time that I should have been getting back to camp after a long day, I rolled into Exmouth and checked in. A quick clean up and it was time to hit the town. Didn't have to go far. Diagonally opposite was an awesome American style pub with pool tables, great food and bar staff to die for. Tiny denin shorts, T-shirts and straw hats. Evidently someone forgot to tell Exmouth that it was winter. Got kicked out at stumps and rolled into bed about 12:30. Sunday morning (today) was overcast, but by the time we motored to our snorkeling spot, the cloud was gone and it was a fabulous day. I wasn't expecting much, as this stop was really to gauge how proficient people were in the water before heading out...to the deep blue. My, my...I was impressed. Lots of nice fish. Yeah, yeah...been there, done that. Then I found a giant clam that was one of the biggest I have ever seen...and I have seen a lot. Next was a good sized stingray. I swam down to about 2 metres away, so I didn't scare it off. A bit detached from the main group, I found a reasonably sized shark. He was lying still under a edge. BTW, that theory that sharks are always moving is bullshit. I swam down to 1 metre in front of it's face and could see every tooth in its mouth as it slowing opened and closed its mouth. It was about 5 foot (1.5m) long and about 8" (200mm) across the head. Leave that shark, a shovel nosed shark, about 6 foot (1.8m) swam by and I went to get close and personal, but I blew my ear out in doing so. Bugger. Back on the boat, we headed out of the reef and of the continental shelf, into the deep blue. There were bait fish balls all over the place with big fish having a feeding frenzy. We were waiting for the spotter plane to find a whale shark when we took off to get nice and close to a hammerhead that was just cruising around the surface. I was mightly impressed that the spotter plane saw him from so far away. Unexpectedly, a big manta ray took to the sky and crashed back into the water just off the starboard side. And a whale swan passed, heading the opposite way. Then the radio came to life with the words "I've got a shark". Off we went. The tour operators do a good job. They locate the shark, track it, and dump you in the water in front of it. You form a line and then the shark just swims by, metres away. Then you swim with it...which wasn't hard to do. It was in no hurry. It was about 25 foot (7+m) long. Awesome! The water was warm, probably about 20+ degs and the visibility was good. We were in 20-25m depth and you could see the bottom. We leap frogged, as we were split into 2 groups of 10, back onto the boat and back in front of the shark(s) again, for a couple of hours before we had to head back. Our tour was shorter than usual because we had to drive over 400km to get back to camp. On the way back, we ended up following alongside a couple of hump backed whales, which meant lots of breaches close to the boat. Coming back into the lagoon, it was turtle spotting time. There was about 12-15 of them before we spotted the rarer of the 2 nature dolphins to the area. And that was even better because it was a mother and baby. Back on land, everyone is still in there shorts and swimmers and it is a glorious day. Winter! What winter? There wre a few emus on the wayback into town, then we were off, back to camp. Getting out of the bus at camp, I could hear that there was a cracking band blasting out high energy tunes at one off the bars and quickly put was stuff away and headed down. When they finished, it was a quick feed at the mess hall and hit the pool tables. The music playing was just one classic after another as I downed some coldies and shot pool. Bed time now and I am imparting this massive post because it was one of the best experiences of my life and it was made so much better by the fact that I should have been working and in camp. And my actual R&R is now only 5 days away. Awesome. If any of you guys out thete ever get the chance, I highly recommend the tour. It is an amazing example of what Australia has to offer. And what pleased me today was that I managed to snag (😀) an exceptal day, by the stansards of the typical tour (another tour that day didn't even see a whale shark) and I should have been wallowing away in my little room in camp. Fucking awesome weekend. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Nice to have a break from the recent weather. Over the past month or so, we have had storms that brought down several trees. We've also now more than filled all three large rainwater tanks and three dams. One of the front paddocks is looking like a lake. It's been one extreme to the other. Just a short while back, it was thought one of the rainwater tanks might need to be filled with water from the bore. The main house was close to running out of water. Now the creeks are flowing really fast, one section of the driveway is underwater, and twice I've had to transfer water from the tank behind my unit so as to prevent overflow flooding into my accommodation and the adjacent sheds.

This afternoon I took a look at the back paddocks where there is a floodway. I am living on a 100 acre property. This has been pretty dry the two years I've been here. Today the floodway is about three feet deep and host to a broader variety of birdlife than usual. This includes a pair of Black Swans gracefully paddling side by side.

He told me that he tries to do this once a day but that many people say no..those people IMO actually stop him from doing something wonderful for him. Q Many philosophers have written on these sorts of matters. What of the potential his (the benefactor) act impinges the right of those others to self-determination, self-sustenance and self-esteem? Is he motivated by a genuine desire to assist the less fortunate, or is he motivated by the feeling he derives for himself because he perceives he has assisted someone else? Do the beneficiaries of his largesse actually require assistance? Some people may feel belittled by such an approach. Some other people are happy to take all the "free stuff" they can get.

I should like to point out, I do not mean to suggest you might be one to take all you can get. Rather, I merely suggest it is not unfair or unreasonable for someone to politely decline the benefactor's offer. You indicated your own initial hesitation. Many others also would hesitate because of ingrained skepticism/query: "What's the catch?"

to invite (if not provoke) some considered thought. In the example of the "smoothy man", I have simply challenged the Politically Correct view expressed by Q because in this case, I believe it is based on flawed logic. I suggested this man's motivation may have been self serving, and Q agrees insofar as she expressed the view it is "something wonderful for him". I question just how charitable it is to offer to pay for a person who surely must already have the capacity to pay for their own order. Would it not be a more worthwhile and charitable act for that man to purchase a smoothy for any one of the many homeless men and women to be found in our cities and towns? I also declared I do not consider it unreasonable for someone to politely decline this man's offer (for the reason I've just stated, amongst the myriad other possible/plausible reasons). The implication in Q's post was that by preferring to pay their own way, or by preferring to maintain their independence, those who decline the offer are somehow offending against this man. "devil's advocate" or "superiority" (?) It would genuinely surprise me if as you say, "none of us understand" (me) because this is basic logic. Some people may prefer such charitable actions be reserved for those who genuinely require that form of assistance. How many of us fail to even notice just how many people sleep rough every night? Given the change of seasons, I for one would defer in favour of buying a cup of coffee or tea for one of the homeless people I'd likely have walked past on my way to the shops. Would you really suggest my take on this constitutes a negative? Would you suggest my preference to see charity going to the genuinely needy is somehow superior? (On that one last count, you may be right).

Yep. So he wants to think so..... so trying so hard to get a rise out of people.... I just skip his posts nowadays as it is more a rambling rather than communicating and connecting with people...

...that took both a great deal of courage particularly in again opening pathways of self-revelation that I doubt I would dare. That said, the premise presented is one that I would like to discuss into the wee hours of the night albeit not necessarily in this venue as there are some life parallels that I prefer to share only with those that I believe will understand or am fortunate enough to share intimacy. In a perfect world, a roaring fire on a cold night sharing thoughts, feelings, perceptions, laughs...all to rare and with an ever rarer bottle of Glenmorangie! Time will tell and regardless of my oft times bravado, I often flounder about like a kid with his shoe laces untied when I am speaking to a woman that I find extreme attractive, intelligent and with a similar sense of humour. Figure that... yet a nice feeling all around. Today was again... as good I would have chosen to make it!

Quoting 'Qefenta1' I had my grumpy pants on and hadn't read your May entry on the word thread ontology..cheers Q but I don't think it necessary for you to apologise. Which word or date are you referencing? I did share a few words on that thread in May.
