What's pleased you today?

April 20 2016

This has to be the flip side of the venting thread. Two things have pleased me today, being human therefore somewhat selfish I'm happy to have a new job. It's no big deal as it's an internal vacancy doing essentially the same thing but it is an improvement as it involves a great step sideways, same pay grade but into another department with a better culture and budget (overtime $$$). So better pay and conditions, slightly better but significant.YAY.On the bigger picture the Govco's announcement about doing "something" about domestic violence against women is a long overdue initiative. It also looks like it has a chance of being effective and turning the tide and culture of the demographics that need a better break.*Please don't overthink my use of the word demographics as I mean women across the socio_economic spectrum*It's about time the cowards of this world disempowered, it's up to us the populace to to help curb this scourge of our society. If we can make this happen a double YAY would be in order

So I pulled into the closest tyre place. *don't think I can say the name here* They were very obliging, helpful and prompt to repair. Within 1/2hr, I was back on the road again. When I said thank you, I was given reply "Not a problem, more than happy to help you out. That's what we're here for" Don't get this sort If service very often, when one pulls into a place, out of the blue. Especially first thing of a Monday morning. I was very impressed. *Bonus- I even got a cappuccino and muffin while I waited. Ms Foxy

Yesterday I retrieved some additional books from storage, including more of my dictionaries and reference books. I was aware one of them in particular is pretty old now, but could find scant publication date info in it. "Webster's Handy Modern Dictionary"(Edited by Cecil Weatherly, B.A.)(Printed by William Brendon and Son Ltd, Plymouth for E.W. Cole Book Arcade, Melbourne)(Green Cloth-bound cover). Apparently E.W. Cole lived from 1832 - 1918. One of the appendices makes reference to: "The Joint Committee on Grammatical Terminology was constituted in 1909..." This evening I found an advertisement for it in Melbourne's 'Argus' Newspaper dated 15 January 1916. The same page of this newspaper carries articles concerning the WWI fighting in (modern day) Iraq. Whilst the definitions/vernacular of many words have changed in the intervening period, some other things seem to have changed little. (I used this dictionary last night to draft my "Alliterative Geniculation" in the "Word of the Day" thread).

I worked from home, with the sun shining in the window. I took a break in the afternoon and sat out on my outdoor lounge soaking up some rays. A bird flew through the area...and yes it woke me from my snooze! It sat up on the guttering looking at me for about 10 minutes, then flew in again, and perched on the back of the chair opposite me. We sat together for at least 20 minutes, just looking around and at each other....2 metres apart. It finally flew off into the trees. It was a Kookaburra, my favorite bird. What a beautiful way to spend an afternoon.

Is a great movie. I saw it the other night with some work mates. I spent the day at a ute comp. I often say that I never walk away from a ute comp without coming a place in at least one category but always add that there's always a first time for everything. That first time has not yet arrived. I didn't place first in anything so have yet to win back my title of coming first in Best Chick's Ute (came second in that one this year) but I do have several ribbons to add to my collection now. I was also asked if I'm interested in being more involved with helping to run the comp next year. OMG YES of course I am!!

re Bridget Jones movie. I also went to see it the other day with my daughter. I loved the first movie, but felt this one lacked the punch, it seemed a bit washed out to me, and the chemistry between her and Colin Firth, that same chemistry I didn't think was there with this new guy. However, well first, I'm happy you enjoyed it, I'm a big fan of the movies and her, but the experience of spending time with my daughter, to be honest, it wouldn't have mattered what was on the screen, just happy to be with her, and bless her heart, she bought gold class tickets so we sat in comfort, stuffed ourselves full of junk food actually I should speak for myself, I did, she was much less embarrassing then we had a drink in the bar when we came out. So amazing. We're both so busy, we rarely get to catch up but it's worth it when we do

Definitely going gold class if i ever go with a guy and the seats up the back are good I'm told the chicks put out there depends how big your guys thighs are - the seats are pretty wide for petite little things, not so much for guys who don't skip leg day :p and if you can get an empty theatre with people up the front not the back, and servers not coming through all the time. Daytime session in one where the armrests fold up is way easier, easier to find an empty-ish theatre with a dark corner... Don't forget protection for the seat :p

  • RHP

    RHP User

Haha nice tip re protection 😊 My daughter has been to others and said the one we were at was the best, innaloo, the screen is better too apparently. I think the seats are leather, mega comfortable and had the lift up armrests, electronic reclining. I thought they seemed wide. But yes, either way, choosing a quieter movie would be essential, new movie is booked out, full, best to choose a really unpopular movie 👌😎

Those who know Neaves Road West Bullsbrook will know it's not the safest road around town. I use it regularly on my commute. On Friday morning around 5.00 A.M I was in my ute and on the open road section and there was a large truck coming towards me with its driving lights all on full beam. I flashed him then a split second before we passed each other I noticed that his row of lights seemed quite wide, this was an overtaking vehicle which just and only just squeezed through the gap! I guess the gap was less than the length of a cricket pitched and less than one second of clearance, way too close for comfort. I was on the phone at the time talking on my Bluetooth and I interrupted the conversation with a giant F Bomb, which I then had to explain to my friend on the line. I'm wondering if the truckie was trying to warn me by keeping his lights up, it didn't help because I then focused my view point on the left shoulder of the road to stop from being dazzled by the lights. I guess it just goes to show how delicate the balance point between life and death can be at times. A head on collision at open road speeds is not the sort of thing I'd really want to survive. If the truck had become embroiled in a collision then it would have made the whole thing even deadlier. Oh well I guess only the good die young. I awoke on Saturday morning with a renewed zest for life, my time here is not up yet.

  • RHP

    RHP User

I think they can make life a lot more precious Hank... I do question other choices by the truck driver, whether or not he was aware of the threat. :-) High beam blinds the oncoming driver making it dangerous. Flashing, like you did, would have been more appropriate if the high beams were meant to be a warning imo. That he could have slowed down to give the overtaker more space? Maybe he was and you weren't aware of it or you were aware and simply didn't mention it. I'm glad you're okay! That everyone is okay. Learning someone had died on the road out of the town we used to get home from holiday after we'd gotten home last year was spinny. Peachy

routine broadcast on ABC2: Luke Heggie. Have been contending with round after round of BS for a while now. Too isolated where I am now (and have been doing some venting via the forum here). Luke Heggie's gig was the best laugh I've had in weeks!

I love a good laugh Ontology. We've been watching Christmas dvds here at home with most being based on comedy. There has been Home Alone. What a crack up, that movie always makes me LOL even while my logical mind is going... Say what??? I think my favourite part is when he uses aftershave. The Santa Clause is awkward all over and downright satisfying in the outcome. Tonight was, Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase. I dunno, that movie kills me. We watch it every year, I know what's coming and I love it. You know laughing out loud is literally good for the lungs as well as many other benefits. Peachy

That's fourteen subjects ticked off the list for this course. Pretty happy with that. A step closer to moving on. Got to reassess which modules I want to do next semester. Can't re-enrol 'til next year, so now a brief rest, then I've need to start house hunting (and juggle some more work on other written submissions). Couldn't ever get bored - there's always something on the go!

@Q Congrats on your milestone! :D time to celebrate and reward that feeling :) cheers! Today, I felt genuinely free and happy again. Listening to old school fave songs, took me back to happy, exciting days of anticipating life ahead and today I felt that feeling again :) - Posted from rhpmobile
